Does Nero install ASPI?

Win XP Pro, installed Nero. It works fine. Downloaded ASPI but never installed it. Should I (will it speed things up)? Or does Nero install an ASPI layer (and if so, is it just as good as Adaptec's)?

That all depends on your burner. Is it an external or internal SCSI burner? If not, the question is moot because Advanced SCSI Programming Interface (ASPI) is not applicable to IDE.

If I recall correctly Nero installs its own, you should be fine with that, is it working at the advertised speed now?

If you are running SCSI then you need to install an ASPI layer for the best compatibility.

Nero does bring its own ASPI layer but, as I recall, this isn't available to other applications.

You do need ASPI on some OSes to communicate with ATAPI devices, such as IDE CD burners.

Windows NT OSes (NT, 2k, XP) all come with SPTI, which is the prefered method for communicating with SCSI and ATAPI devices.

Right! If you are running XP, that's all you need. It is all built in unless you have a SCSI burner. Then there is an XP patch for Adaptec's ASPI program.

My burner is IDE.

I'm a little confused, always having read where people on various forums (incl AT) talk suggest to install ASPI on XP to allow certain burning software to work and assumed most were using IDE burners. So it is not recommended?

I'll have to check but I'm pretty sure I used ForceASPI at one time. Should I reinstall XP's original ASPI? Nero (recent) and CloneCD both work but I have only tried on a few cheapy slow CDR's I had left so I don't know yet if I can get the drive's max speed.

Yes, Nero installs its own ASPI driver but it's not accessible to other programs by default. If you want other programs to have access to it, copy WNASPI32.DLL from your Program Files\Ahead\Nero directory (or wherever you installed it) to your Windows\System32 directory.

Sorry to pull up an older thread, but I never really got the answer I was looking for. It was mentioned here (w/ IDE) to just use XP's default SPTI, but also mentioned to install ASPI (or copy Nero's ASPI DLL). So which is better?
