To the point:
I'd like to know if the D-Link DSL-2640B modem+router can use open source firmware like openwrt. I have no clue if open source router firmware can be used on combo modem/routers. And some of the particulars of this router seem like they may be proprietary. But the user interface is really clumsy and limiting- so I'd like to use something else if possible, especially if it enables more control+functionality.
Also, anyone familiar with this router? If has an 'attainable' dsl speed much higher than what we've been line-limited to before. I'm wondering how accurate it is, or if it is right and verizon cleaned the lines up/ hooked us up to adsl2/2+... Like to know about this...
Background:
My mother had been using a separate modem + router to get online with verizon dsl. I got ahold of, and setup, a used westell 327w combo modem+router for her. What a POS that thing turned out to be- enough for a full flame thread...She decided to buy a new D-Link "DSL-2640B" combo modem+router as the 327w was dropping connections and clients and proved unreliable. I read it had a mini-pci wireless card inside, so scavenged that out and saw the 1 significant cap corroded- I figure the 327w was overheating and the crap-cap ruptured. The new router+modem works great, but the gui is lame and hard to navigate. It doesn't even seem I can get a connection log/overview to help me get client mac's to enable mac-restriction security. However, there was a leaflet in the package giving info about the device using gnu-licensed software. I figure: whoa- linux-based firmware! Let's upgrade this puppy! I'd like to know if I can- don't want to brick my mother's new router! haha
