Does my girlfriend need pepper spray?

My girlfriend just told me she wants pepper spray to protect herself. She lives in one of the least violent states in the union (Hawaii). I told her its a waste of money. She neither goes clubbing, or big parties to get herself into the kind of trouble that mace/pepper spray warrants. What do you guys think?

Better safe than sorry. If my girlfriend said she wanted some my ass would be at the store buying it for her.

 
Better safe than sorry, just imagine how pissed off she'll be at you if she ends up getting attacked and doesn't have any spray on her.
 
I'd worry about a false sense of security it may provide. She might be better off with a really loud whistle. It's much easier to run & blow a whistle to attract help than it is to run and fire off pepper spray.

I wouldn't go with some cheap pepper spray either, I'd find out the maximum strength spray deterrent allowed by law (Mace, a pepper spray/tear gas combo) in her area and get her some of that.

I would do some research on pepper sprays before actually purchasing something for her. Does she carry a purse? If so, you should look into getting a collapsable aluminum batton.

she doesnt exactly have the physical strength necessary to beat down a male attacker with a stick 😛 but i'm going to look into one of those toys for me 😀

Oh believe me, it doesn't take that much to take down a person with a batton <------- Been hit lightly in Escrima, a stick-based martial art: and it still hurt like a bltch!

Uhm, on a more somber note, mace is not recommended because the assailant can use the spray against her (since it's a close-range tool), FYI.

Even with a stun gun, unless you know how to properly use it (you need to be trained [ergo confident in and used to using it] to use anything in a high-pressure situation), you'd be screwed.

Just tell her to do the common-sense things - travel in groups, only in well-populated, well lit areas, don't travel too late, avoid the bad places in the area, etc.
