Does "My Documents" have to be on the boot partition?

I'd like to create two partitions on my primary drive so that I can have the operating system and all installed programs on the C: partition, but all of my data file, i.e. My Documents on the D: partition.

My reason for this is so that I can keep the C: partition well-organized and fast. I'm constantly changes the files in My Documents, which leads to a fragmented partition. Obviously, creating a shortcut wouldn't work to My Documents wouldn't achieve my objective.

Is there anyway to do this?

I followed the following steps to change the path to my documents:
- display it on your desktop (that shortcut has special properties)
- move it to your D or where you want it.
- do a regedit search for your old my documents folder and change the keys to your new my documents folder.
- normally all applications will now see your new my documents on D as your my docs folder.

1. Right click on "My Documents"
2. Click "Properties"
3. Click the Move button
4. select where you would like to move to (In your case D:\My Docs\ or something like that)
5. Say "Yes" when it asks to move the current documents to the new location

Not that it matters to you anymore but I personally make sure My Documents isn't pointing at all my stuff. It's really annoying when you're hitting the Up Folder button and windows throws you from the middle of the filesystem to the desktop. I can do just fine without a special link to my stuff.
