He's > 30, lives with my parents, plays age of empires everyday with his friends, but has a full time IT job...
 
hmm.. hard to say. If it weren't for the full time IT job I would say he is indeed a failure.

With the IT job I would say he is just more of a loser.
 
My problem is when people get to that age and they haven't found any kind of career/meaningful job yet.

I have a friend who still lives at home (in the same bedroom and bed he's had since he was a baby), is 31, plays online poker all day, and folds clothes at Macy's for $8 an hour. His parents bought him his last 4 cars. He keeps crashing them from being drunk.
 
Why's he still at home? There are a number of possible good reasons.

• Helping take care of your elderly parents, even tacitly?
• Saving on rent for a huge down payment?
• The location keeps him closer to his drug client base?
• etc?
 
With current economy, not fail. He's saving a ton of rent money and utilities probably, living at home. Once the housing market goes back on an upswing, he should be able to cash in on a nice house and earn some $$$. If he still chooses to stay at home, then fail.

No, he's essentially stealing from his parents. Stealing their shelter, their food, their comfort/utilities. Only losers and complete and utter failures use the "but I'm saving for a house!" excuse.

Get off your ass and move out and put a roof over your head. Until then you are still a child. In OP's brother's case, a 31 year old child.

The only acceptable excuse is supporting your parents entirely. Meaning you're the one putting roof over head, food on the table, warmth via electricity.

And even that is a little creepy unless they have medical conditions.

If he is paying rent, that is okay.
If he is paying back student loans, that is okay.
If not and just mooching... that is still okay if it is okay with the 'rents.

I payed rent at my mother's as soon as I graduated college.

Christ, I generally respect your opinion, but I just don't understand this way of thinking at all. 🙁
