In terms of studying, reading, doing work?

I'm talking about brainwork where you have to write a paper, do homework, work on a company presentation tomorrow, etc. Does music help or hurt?

For me it degrades performance. I end up preferring quiet.

helps for exactly 48 minutes and 23 seconds. after that, it becomes a distraction.

exactly 48minutes and 23 seconds. This has been tested and proven over the history of the universe.

Yes...as long as it's not loud.

When I was in school, any time I was studying, I had classical music playing in the room...but at a very low volume. Kind of drowns out background noises and helps me focus. If it's loud enough to actually hear the music, or make out what the announcer is saying...it's too loud, and becomes a distraction.

It helps block out other noise.

When it's quiet? No, music is just a distraction.
If I really need to focus on something that requires intense thinking I don't listen to music. If I'm working on something a bit tedious and I can spare the focus, though, that is when I listen to music.

None for me. Music helps me move I don't need to be moving while studying or reading. BTW this was a big reason I went water cooling since it's infancy. Basically I don't care for noises at my desk that includes computers.

Yes, very much so. When doing boring reading/studying where I need to absorb things, then I have to listen to music without vocals, but for my general work day (spreadsheets, e-mails, and whatnot) I can listen to any kind of music.

I dont like it too quiet. It also helps block out other noise.

I can study no problem in a loud room people talking as long as I cant really understand what they are saying (lunch room..ect)

Most of the time if I am studying and put pandora on, many songs will pass before I notice there is music playing. lol

Sometimes. Then there are times when I leave my mp3 player at home and go to the library to get some peace and quiet, but people are talking loudly in the library anyways. Those are times when I wish I was listening to music.

Helps keep me focused and motivated while looking for a job and working.

If the music your listening to only distracts you rather than positively impact whatever task your doing, your listening to the wrong music.

Depends on what I'm doing/What I'm listening to. Generally instrumentals and techno help me focus and just drown out background distractions but music with lyrics can distract me.

Music, with or without vocals, is beneficial to listen to when I'm doing something menial, such as programming and number crunching. However, if I am reading something, or need to comprehend something, I will typically opt for non-vocal music.
