Does monochrome laser printer = grayscale capable?

I don't need color, but I keep seeing laser printers labeled as monochrome - black and white. Can these printers print colors in grayscale similar to inkjet?

Most can do grayscale for images and graphics, but some are LOTS better at it than others. Check the reviews of the units on your short list.

I have narrowed it down to these two (both networked and automatic duplex):

Lexmark E250dn
Good text, fair photos, good graphics, 2.85 cents/page (couldn't find any so might get it directly from lexmark)

Dell Laser Printer 1720dn
Excellent text, good photos, fair graphics, 1.7 cents/page (have a lot of third-party toner available)

Well, as I understand it, Dell printers are made by Lexmark for Dell. So six of one, half-dozen of the other.

. . . and the degree of greyscale quality is a function of DPI and printer memory.

Also, keep an eye on the reported cost per page info as each manufacturer has their own standard for coverage and text vs. graphics. Some manufacturers even adjust their standards according to which model they're talking about. God bless Cannon. 🙁
