Does Maxtor make Quantum

I just bought a retail Maxtor 40 gig hard drive and when I openned the box I found a Quantum Fireball HD. Are they both made by the same company? More importantly, which is the better product.

Having the rebadged remnants of a defunct company just wouldn't cut it for me. If it were my money, I would insist on nothing less than what I paid for... and unless the box gave an indication of a rebadged unit - I would consider it unacceptable 🙂
 
It's not really rebadged since Quantum is Maxtor

The box lists the drive specs, if they match you got what you paid for.
 
There is nothing wrong with Quantum. In fact you should consider yourself lucky as long as it's not a Fireball AS, that series sucked. If it's a Fireball LM you have a very good drive. Also all the Maxtor SCSI drives are Quantum product lines, Maxtor stopped making SCSI drives a while ago.
 
It comes down to product quality assurance and public relations. There should be something in the box that notify the buyer that it contains a Quantum made drive. If there's nothing in the box, then I would actually call up MAXTOR and grumble about the situation. Just tell them you're disappointed in opening a box that didn't have MAXTOR inside it. (A name you trusted😉). Ask them to exchange it with a REAL MAXTOR drive. More likely they will send you a bigger harddrive than what you have now - but you need to return the Quantum drive to them.

I didn't realized that they stopped making SCSI drive.😱

Of course, by now they should have SCSI drives with MAXTOR labels by now.(new batch) I still would probably ask for an exchange if there is no indication anywhere in the box that it contains a Quantum drive.
 
If one HD goes out does that mean the rest suck ? is there logic here!!. I have two AS fireballs and one LM left over and both models run great,The "AS" ver is a little faster on access than the "LM" through.

The model is the Fireball Plus AS. Thanks for the info everybody. BTW, there was a note burried in the box about the merger. I was so shocked at seeing the Quantum label, that I didn't notice the rest of the paperwork.
I was planning on using this in a RAID configuration since my roomates already filled up the 65 gigs already on my computer.

Since its an &quot;AS&quot; drive... I would probably return it and go for the DiamondMax +60 (currently Maxtors best IDE drives). Anyway, thats just my suggestion, the AS drives aren't the greatest (the LM are the best Fireball drives I think). But if it works for you and your happy with it... keep it, your the one thats going to use it... not us 😉.

While the AS is newer than the LM, the LM is supposedly slightly faster than the AS. However, the AS is extremely quiet while the LM is probably the loudest IDE drive made in recent time.
 
If the drive you bought was under the name Maxtor, you should get a Maxtor hard drive. I am not saying Quantum is bad, but if you wanted a Quantum drive you would have bought the box that said Quantum on it and not Maxtor.

OMG you guys are crazy. It's JUST a name!!! your fretting over a name. Here let me peal off that quantum label, and put my hand made maxtor logo on it (there all better now!).... Hey you can now put your worries to rest!

Maxtor bought out quantum a LONG time ago...... They share their factories.
 
i own both the AS and the LM and i say the AS is a better drive since it has never failed (LM failed once cuz of overclocking) and its much more quiet when accessing it (i can only hear the spinning noise during daily usage).

Since Quantum is Maxtor, and Maxtor is still in business, they're not defunct. Are you suggesting Maxtor is trying to get rid of all the Quantum units without hornoring warranty or any sort of thing like that? If you do, then you're wrong. Since all the Quantum tech belong to Maxtor, they do have the right to sell them, after all, the Fireball Plus AS is listed as a legitimate Maxtor product. I have also seen future Quantum hard drives simply being relabeled Maxtor, how's that different from getting a Quantum anyway?



As to the original question, just keep the Fireball Plus AS, they're still made by the Quantum factories which just belong to Maxtor now. I wouldnt worry too much, Quantum and Maxtor both make excellent hard drives.
