does KDE lag nearly as bad as windows?

if i'm going to run a Linux server for HTTP, FTP and 2 game servers i gotta know if running in KDE will totaly destroy the point of getting Linux. Duron 800 is roughly the speed CPU i'm gettin

Running X on a server is usually a bad idea. KDE always lagged for me, but I havent used a recent version or on a machine with comparable hardware.

half our sun lab machines in uni have just been upgraded to solaris 8 w/kde on them (sun sparc ultra 5's) and they are v.slow running kde.

admittedly these rigs are pretty old but i think most people are just going back to the usual xsession windows now. unless they want to play the games that is

If you're just running two game servers, an httpd, and an ftpd, then you don't need X. So why run it?
