Does it really help?

Does adding a blowhole to the side of a case really help keep it cool?

TIA, micron

Micron - I've been reading alot about these folks who mod their cases for those side blow holes. It seems to make sense if they're blowing air directly onto the mobo itself, with a corresponding top blow hole (preferably a large one) sucking the hot air out... If anything, the top one would seem to pretty much mandatory if you opt for the side ones...

Only draw back that I can see (other than noise) is the problem of a big build up of dust having been sucked into the case... And then there's all the arguments about using filters and then how filters could end up reducing your total CFM...

;)

It helps if you have an overclocked CPU or video card. If not, then it is just for looks and some extra noise!! ;)

I have an OC'd CPU, but I don't have room for a blowhole in the top of my case.

micron - do you have any room in the back near where the PS is? That might be a good alternative as well...

Somehow, the heat that rises to the top of the case, has to be sucked out. That way, any fans you might have in the front or on the side, will aid in the total airflow through the case, ie., from intake at bottom, through to the top, then out...

I have a 92MM fan in the rear and a 80MM fan in my PSU. There is no room for a fan in front and I can't make room on top because my PSU and CDROM & CDRW drives ar4e up there.

Okay... well most people with front fans have them at the very bottom. My Enlight 7237 came with one already there at the bottom...

Since you do have one up top in the back, you might be okay... Although I have seen some wild case mods where they did make room by cutting the frame at the top to sortof sit the fan partially over the PS and partially over the open case below.... That mod was supposedly justified because they put a huge 120mm fan up top for the blow hole... LOL

If you do decide to put a blow hole on the side, you may only need one (I've seen some folks with 2!) to balance off the one up top. The PS I think is sortof over-rated as being able to effectively exhaust since it has heat sinks inside for itself, that inturn generate heat that needs to be exhausted.

Poof,
there are some cases with 4 120mm blowholes on the side of the case(wow!). Just wanted to let ya know
Micron,
Panaflo fans can be used to quiet down systems if they are too noisy. If you have a lot of excess heat in your case, make a blowhole.

:Q

I guess you have to strap that sucker down then... otherwise it'll blow across the room! LOL

Someone posted a pic somewhere (maybe here) of a mod of what was billed as the largest case fan ever... basically a case made from PVC piping with a 20" room fan attached to the side panel... LOL

Looked like one of those hydro foils... :D

If your case is hot then a blowhole might be needed. I think a better idea is to get a case that has good air flow from the beggining without chopping it all up. I have an Antec SX830 with 4 80mm fans a P3 600@841 a GeForce 2 GTS and case temp stays the same as ambient room temp. In my opinion to put a blowhole in this system would be foolish

Side vented and OC'ed here and with a custom mod its slightly inset( l/~ )and tilted nice and quiet with that. Also a little mod on my FOP-32 to also dampen whine. As for the dust side intakes will help prevent it. Adding positive pressure and active airflow, less dust will settle compared to a retail build with just a PSU fan.

Oh and I modded the desk :) so the side intake could breathe easier.

Unfortunatly I think I have hit the wall with my TB750@1071.
