Does it matter what grades you get in college?

Ive always been curious....If you get straight B's at Harvard would it really make any difference if you got straight A's? Does your future employer look at these?

For the first job, they play a bit of a role (and some places, no role at all). After the first job, they don't mean ******.

for employment, not as much, but some of the larger companies DO look at that closely. If grad school is what you want to do, get good grades 🙂

It really depends.. I had a ton of interviews last year and some of them much prefered experience/technical interview to grades. I've also interviewed at places that would throw your resume out if you had below a 3.0... just depends.

i sure as hell hope not, cause i already f'd that all up. good thing i got an internship while i had good grades, I'm just hoping they don't ask what my gpa is once i graduate

These days? Not really

are you serious? Well to answer OP, YES, yes it does really matter.

Just from experience, My GPA is below 3.0, 2.89 actually. So I used to put it in my resume in my job hunt, and I NEVER got anyone calling me back. I have a lot of work experience and research experience compared to most people with good grades, still nothing.

This year, with the same resume, i took out the GPA, and got called back for an interview in a lot of companies, big companies (Altera, MS, Yahoo!, etc.)

Oh, and also, i was at a meeting with a committee who were trying to select students for a big research project over the summer, and from what I noticed, they first sorted the applicants by gpa, then looked at their skills.

Of course it does. Obviously you can have things that off set poor grades but to say grades dont matter is just moronic. Having a 4.0 at Duke is so, so, SO much more impressive than a 3.0 , especially in a tough major like bio or chem

ONLY on your first job. Experience in your field matters more so if you can get a summer internship paid or FREE with a prospective employer, then you have got a big IN when you graduate. Also bilingual trumps grades or qualifications in a lot of jobs these days.

Says who besides you and your college officials?
Says my premed advisors, the med school admissions officers I've spoken to and the many med students who came before me. I guess if you're not applying to med school my exmaple wont hold much water but for me grades matter.

really are you applying to med school i had no idea

Let's just say anything below a 3.0 will get tossed out by employers when you are interviewing for your first job. Many of the big engineering companies want a 3.5 from a well-known engineering school.

Haha, i was jsut trying to hammer in that for people applying to graduate school positions it's important to have good grades. Although i would venture to guess good grades + work exp can't hurt in a finding a job either.
