Does it make sense for me to buy a dual core Opteron over a single core?

My system is paired with 2 gigs of ram and a 7900GTKO, would it make sense for me to buy dual core now?

Do you happen to do any DCing? I'm kinda wishing I had gotten a dual core for my wife instead of an Opty 148. The thing crunching like crazy as it is--with two, it would be wicked.

DCing? The cpu I've ever used was an AMD 64 3500 stock and that thing was a monster, I can't imagine something clocked @ 2.6GHZ or more.

sometimes, when I do folding @ home it's usually overnight and I have another computer for that, but as far as upgrades go, I think it makes sense to get a dual core cpu now.

It does make sense to go dual core. Chances are, you do more multitasking then you realize. Have you ever dreaded to run a full system AV scan because it would make your system mostly useless for the next thirty minutes or more? What about any cpu intensive and long term task? With dual core, you do not have to worry about what you run at the same time. It just makes sense to get a dual core system now. I go into so many threads writing many paragraphs explaining why it is so awesome. Why not just get it and see it for yourself?

Thanks, and yes I do hate running av scans, the reason I stopped multitasking is probobly because my computer can't keep up with it so I became fed up with this single core cpu, honestly does HT technology help at all? My friend's AMD 64 can multitask better than this p4.

I just nailed my budget, I'm like $4 over what I'd like to spend on the system, but honestly $4 over isn't that bad, that's why I'm considering getting arctic silver or not.

I can say it would not make sense to buy anything non-dual core this day and age, unless it's just for a ghetto box which is not intended to do anything other than simple tasks.

it's worth not having a comp for a week having a dual core opteron would be tight but when the conroe comes out your going to regret not waiting.

edit: chill with the new topic button you can ask multiple questions in one thread

I'm losing my laptop in a few days because school's about to end, that means I'll have to spend about a month without a computer, I'd be so bored during that time period.

lol choose your next computer based on your needs, not on the fact woot is a intel shareholder. That being said, I suggest waiting for the 805to drop to $93. If you need more performance go opty now or wait for conroe.

The thing I lik about the conroe is that I would be saving $100 on a cpu if I wait about a month, that's something worth considering. I actually have a lot of money in intel, their stocks have done close to nothing in the past few years, hopefully this raises their stocks big time.
