just a pet peeve.

What does it mean exactly that they are laughing and joking across the entire bank? Like there are so many of them that it spans across the length of your bank, and they are in on one collective joke?

My foreign co-workers are actually employed by an organization in Japan, so I can't fault them for speaking to each other in Japanese.

My research lab has a lot of graduate students straight from China, our PI is one as well. But the policy is to speak only English

I don't mind when they are talking amongst themselves, but it does bother me if others are involved in the conversation.

It's really really really rude... thankfully the only fresh off the boat mexicans (and would thereby have this problem) working in IT that I am aware of are all outside digging the FIOS trenches.

<laughs and uses the keyless entry to make the car go <beep beep>>

it's always kind of annoyed me. I mean, I can understand what they're saying, I speak decent spanish myself, though they don't know that, but it seems rude, since the majority of my department doesn't speak the language and, for all they know, the spanish guys could be totally trash talking them to their face.

i knew a man that had paranoid schizophrenia... he always thought people were talking about him/conspiring against him if he couldnt fully understand/hear their convo. Maybe you or have this ? :p jk

but ya, it's extremely rude to speak another language excluding someone that doesnt understand.

Two girls sitting at their desk. Two tellers behind the window. One or two customers at the window and a few more in line. They start talking to each other... start joking, laughing and approx. 10 minutes later, the are still doing this, while the rest of us are standing there.. like WTF?

If you're all in a central area for some sort of gathering and they do that, then I'd be annoyed. But if it's just through the normal course of the day and they are having their own conversation and I'm not involved... then what do I care what language they talk.

Go learn Klingon with someone else and talk that all day long and see if anyone cares...

This was a huge problem in a place I worked at.

For all of you saying it's no big deal, what would your reaction be if you hear your name mentioned a few times in the foreign language conversation?

You combined two racist terms together into one that no longer makes sense. The derogatory term you are looking for is w*tback. As in swimming over a river to get past the border, to enter the States illegally. Mexican's, as in peoples from the country south of the US, do not use boats to enter the country. Other immigrants, however do. The term FOB, or Fresh Off the Boat generally applies to those of Asian descent.

If you are going to demonstrate your ignorance, at least have it make some sense.

and yet this type of freindly atmosphere will keep the large hispanic clientel coming back to do business with your bank....and increase the client base with word of mouth.

you mistook me for someone who would care. It's been my sence of PC that when you can jam something into one word.... beloved patriot, beautiful ray of sunshine, ***... etc... that it was across the line. Mabye I should have used "beautiful ray of sunshine"

I had better hurry up and edit my post :rolleyes;

If anything, I'm glad I really don't know that much about racial slurs... I think it says something about me that I woudn't have much practice using them... and I'm the ignorant one?

who cares? what business is it of yours, what language they speak to each other?

as long as they conduct their business with you in English, why should it annoy you?

aren't YOU the rude one for wanting to listen in on their conversation? besides, if they were going to talk trash about you in English, i'm sure they would do it away from your listening area anyways.

i used to work in IT at an office that was predominantly russian. i was the only one who didn't know russian in the IT department (except for one guy who never was in the office anyway).

so whenever there was a network problem, the guys would talk in russian amongst themselves about how to fix the problem. then one of them would tell me to fix it. i'd be like ... "uh, well you'll have to repeat everything you said in russian all over again."

it sucked.

Hold on there bucko. Did you just try to pull a fast one on everyone? You purposely were making a racial slur, yet were too stupid to realize which was what, and ended up combining them. Then you tried to make yourself seem high and mighty because your "ignorance" is somehow indication of how un-racist you are? Good try. And the only reason you didn't use terms like beloved patriot, beautiful ray of sunshine, etc is becaues you were trying to circumvent (uncessarily it seems) the censor filter and/or the Moderators.

It's been my sence of PC that when you can jam something into one word.... beloved patriot, beautiful ray of sunshine, ***... etc... that it was across the line.

I am sorry, I am not sure I understand what you are saying here. It has been your sense (sense?) of PC (political correctness) that when you can jam something into one word...? What are you trying to say here? That if you use a single (one) word to describe people, it's crossing the line? Terms are only racist if they are one word? So you cleverly used the term "Fresh off the boat" because that would make it PC?

Your stupidity and blatant lack of self-respect is astounding.

What do people have to hide in the workplace, talking to each other in different languages?

Unless it's more comfortable to speak in whatever language, i don't get why people would purposely speak another language in front of you, knowing that you don't comprehend what they say.
