does HD/Lowes have all the raw materials needed to build a house?

No idea about the cost, but I'm pretty sure they have everything but manpower. Or can special order what they don't have.

Uh... have you ever been to an HD/Lowes? Out west they have all the man power you could want... Jose would gladly build you a house.

No. I highly doubt you can buy the steel beams there. I don't think they sell 4x10's and larger pieces of lumber either.

Have fun making up enough concrete to pour your foundation using 80lb quikrete bags. LOL.

If you had a contractor come in and pour the foundation and build the major part of the frame then yeah, you might be able to finish it off from stuff you find at lowes.

You don't need steel beams to build a house. But yeah, that's why I asked about the foundation.

no?

If you don't use steel then you need wood, and I'm pretty sure lowes doesn't sell large pieces of lumber. The biggest I've seen are 2x12 or 6x6 and those only go to 12 feet long.

lol, 4x10's, umm no, maybe a couple laminated beams for large spans. Steel is not used much unless you have a large span that you are trying to do without posts/supports.

Sorry but they do sell just about any dimension of lumber you might need. It may not be a normally stocked item but they can order it for you.

My point is that lowes doesn't sell anything that would be useful for a beam of any kind. It's just your basic DIY lumber for small framing jobs and decks.

Yes you can get anything you need to build a house from lowes. What they don't have in stock they CAN special order it for you.

Went to Asheville, NC a month or so ago and took a tour. They still have a few of these houses downtown and people still live in them.

There are some people who say my grandfathers house is a Sears Catalog home, no one knows for sure though...

Menards sells house kits - http://www.menards.com/main/projectS...=1&subtypeId=2

Looks like the foundation isn't included, though.

Wow, that would be a hell of a project. Some pretty nice houses too. A nice 2500sq foot house for around $90K isn't too bad. The one my wife and I are about to have built for us is around $160K for a similar house (including foundation).

So if you figure paying a builder is $160K
Buying a kit is $110K (estimate for including foundation)
Simply buying the materials yourself would have to be even cheaper. Ultimately you could probably cut the cost in half or more. Would take you a hell of a long time to do it though unless you had a couple friends to help you working full time.

What are you using 4x10's for in the construction of your house?

90% of a house can be built with 2x4's, 2x6's and 2x12's. And that could include floor and ceiling joists.

EDIT: 90% of the wood pieces used for building a house
