Does having to consistently clear your throat

I quit smoking about 8 months ago after learning my gf's mom had cancer. I'm having to clear my throat all the time though. Wonder if it's anything serious.

Could it be that you are coming down with a throat cold/flu. And, It doesn't hurt to see a doctor since you were a smoker.

It's to the point that it keeps me up at night. It's doesn't happen 24/7, but at least daily for a few hours. Better head to the doc :-\

when you smoked you literally burned off the little cillia that line your respiratory tract. these little cillia are like little fingers that push mucous (along with whatever gunk it collects) up your wind pipe for you to swallow or cough up. It takes a few months for them to grow back after you quit smokin. So most likely you are just not used to doing this normally daily thing, and/or all that stuff collected in your lungs are comin up. I wouldn't worry too much. Lung cancer usually doesn't hit till 20-40 years after you started smoking.

If you went to a mechanic, and he failed to fix your car, you wouldn't have to pay. Too bad that's not the way with doctors!

I saw a doctor for "chronic cough". Got shuffled to pulmonary and ear nose & throat specialists, had myriad of tests and X-rays for about a year. All for naught, but the SOBs certainly bilked my insurance company for a pile of loot!

Suit yourself, but don't expect much.

I second the ENT. I have this problem, constant need to clear my throat. It gets worse at night. I went to an ENT after a couple of primary cares, he used some kind of scope and put it through my nose down my throat. Looks like I'm suffering from a kind of reflux, laryngoreflux (sp) Anyways reflux is coming up swelling up my throat and voice box and larynx among other things. Taking Nexium now for a few months to see if it gets better. I can understand how much this problem bothers you, it pisses me off to no end.

They don't 'die' they get paraized. But your statement is essentialy corrrect. If you are worried at all go to th doctor and ask. Tha is better than asking ATOT anything medical. Don;t make me but out my checkbox.

I also just got over bronchitus. It had almost exacly the symtoms you have.

More like a 50's Chevy!

I'd like to see money held back from doctors, for accomplishing so little for so much money. There ought to be some kind of accountability! :|

i actually do the same. i have to clear my throat often. it does not keep me up at night or anything that bad, but when i'm just sitting around i tend to do it a lot. also when i eat i have to do it when i'm finished eating, more frequently than usual.

however i have asthma, and i know that with asthma you have more mucus and stuff build up in your throat, so this is pretty normal for someone with asthma.
