People trust people with facial hair less. Odd fact, but a fact none the less.

In all fairness it's a crap goatee. It's too long. If you want to appear more credible, trim it.

Not true at all. Can you think of someone with a (neat) mustache that you don't trust?

Hitler?

uhm... i always rock scruff on my face and its usually a 1-2 day shadow...

i am in the law field... pretty funny cause i just had a interview with an applicant's lawyer concerning a case i was prosecuting... what was funny was when i walked down to greet the lawyer and take him up to my office... he didn't expect some punk kid in his mid twenties with facial scruff and pop-boy hair-do working on that case... boy was he in a shock when we discussed the case... noob like me schooling him... lol...

but my boss did give me grief that day on the shoes i was wearing... lol... i did go a little far with those, 😉.

Nicely trimmed, neat facial hair does not look unprofessional. That mess you have on your face DOES look unprofessional. Actually it's gone past unprofessional and into the "I'm scared this guy will follow me home, break into my house while I'm sleeping, kill me, pull out my eyes, and rape my bloody eye sockets" area now. But if it's not hurting your personal or professional life at the moment, by all means, keep it.

If its well kept, it can be professional, but that "thing" looks like a push broom

QFT!

I know a guy who has a beard, but he seems very professional. His beard isn't all that small either. The guy in that pic (you?) looks mentally retarded with the beard. Hair on your lip (a moustache) would really make it look better.

That facial hair does. My program manager at work has a gotee (as do I) and we both look professional. With a beard like that you look like a professional rock band memeber.

Looks pretty bad in my opinion. It sort of screams college drinking boy, and it sure as hell does not convey any sense of professionalism. Facial hair, as others said, can look professional but it depends on the person and how it is kept. I would say on average, though, that the safe bet to look professional is to be clean-shaven.

Favial hair is fine, but it must be trimmed and neat. Yours is way too long.

Yes, thats why in my line of work we have to shave every day.

Unless you happen to be one of those guys in your line of work that doesn't want to paint a big sign saying "SOLDIER" on his chest 😉

On that note, an army veteran happened to be outside my office today, speaking with a coworker, and he stopped his conversation long enough to say that I needed to shave, and that it would do the office well to take up a collection and buy me a razor.

The coworker that was talking to him was speechless, my immediate supervisor turned toward me, and told me to ignore the "old coot", and what her boss, a retired Air Force Commander (IIRC - something to do with managing Air Force bases) said would be too obscured by *'s to be repeated here.

There's a weird pic of me here, if you want a reference. I guess that my goatee is a little off center, but I wouldn't point it out to anyone else, had I even noticed it on them. Ignore the hideously messy desk, and the weird thing I'm doing with my eyes.

I only shave once a week or so and no one considers it unprofessional. I do work in a casual work environment, though.

Agreed. At the company I used to work for, they actually had a policy on facial hair. It was part of the overall policy on dress, hygiene, and appearance. The basic requirement was as you say, nicely trimmed and neat facial hair.

Where I work now, you can do pretty much whatever you want. One guy wears a hawaiian shirt, jean shorts, and sandals 99% of the time, even in the cold winters of wisconsin.
