Does GF 6800 series require "AGP 3.0 Compliant" slot

So, in my paranoia that I am going to buy the wrong part I have been doing some in depth research to see if the eVGA 6800 NU at Newegg is going to work with my ABIT KR7A-RAID (KT266A) mobo. So far everything was looking positive, and then I ran across the system requirements on eVGA's website for the 6800 series cards.

eVGA lists the 6800 series as "REQUIRING" AGP 3.0 Compliant slots
eVGA 6800 Link

XFX lists the 6800 series as "RECOMMENDED" for use with AGP 3.0
XFX 6800 Link

nVidia, Newegg, MSI, Gainward, Albatron, Asus and Leadtek all don't mention anything about having to have AGP 3.0, or recommend AGP 3.0, or even mention the AGP version at all!

So, what gives!? Is anyone else using a 6800 series card in a mobo that only has AGP 2.0 support? What do you think will happen if I run the eVGA 6800 card in my mobo that doesn't have AGP 3.0?

Thanks for any perspective/advice!

Upgrade your mobo first. Even if it does work, it'll be a severe bottleneck for a 6800. I had a KR7A-RAID about 2 years ago, and it was fairly picky...good luck.

I would love to be able to upgrade the mobo right now, but that is not an option. It the 6800 will work, I will get that and upgrade my mobo in like a year or so. If the 6800 will not work, then maybe I will get a 9800 Pro for the time being... either way, my GF3 isn't cutting it. I want to go with the 6800 though since it is a newer product and well worth the $280.

Any more advice?
Thanks!
Eps.

AGPx4 -> AGPx8 makes no difference whatsoever, except in a few benchmarks that are made specifically to test AGP performance.

And yes, it should work, unless eVGA has done something funny to their board, AGPx4 and x8 are back and forwards compatible with eachother.

Let me get this straight...AGP x4 is the same as AGP 2.0? ...and AGP x8 is the same as AGP 3.0?
is that right?

Thanks

If a 9800pro will work, then a 6800 series will also work. They are both 4X/8X AGP cards.

AGP8X offers no performance advantage over AGP4X that anyone would ever notice.

A little off the topic, but evga sells the card at the MSRP of 399.99 while newegg has it for 424.00. I guess that is definitely what you call supply and demand...

Well, the link I had above is actually to the 6800 GT... it was just to demonstrate that eVGA was is saying the 6800 series "requires" AGP 3.0. I fixed the link so it now it points to the 6800 NU, which is the card I am interested in buying from Newegg.

Still no answers to my earlier question...
Is AGP 2.0 the same as saying "AGP 4x"?
Is AGP 3.0 the same as saying "AGP 8x"?
are these terms synonymous?

Thanks

I put a BFG Geforce 6800 GT OC AGP card on my Asus P4T533 last night, and that motherboard is at least a couple of years old now. I'd say you'll be fine. All this AGP 4x/8x/PCI-E seems to be theoretical at best in current technology.

however... on the end of that page it also says:

"While AGP 3.0 spec uses existing AGP 2.0 and AGP Pro 1.5v connectors, this does not mean you can use an AGP 3.0 card on a AGP 2.0 motherboard, you cannot. What is does mean is that some AGP 3.0 motherboards will accept AGP 2.0 1.5v cards. It depends on the design of the motherboard. Some AGP 3.0 motherboards will support only AGP 3.0 and some will support both AGP 2.0 and AGP 3.0. Since this is still a draft spec any of the info on AGP 3.0 is subject to change."

Does this mean that my Abit AGP 2.0 motherboard will not support the AGP 3.0 6800?

No, it doesn't mean that unless the video card is agp3.0 only.

I don't believe the 6800's are limited to AGP3.0 only.
