Does getting cable internet get you tv as well?

The last time I had cable internet hooked up, the tech said "if you just want basic cable, don't bother paying for it. We have to open it up to provide internet service"

Has that been the case for anybody else?

My parents recently got cable internet and sure enough, basic analog and the local QAM channels were availble too.

I posted a thread about it and the consensus was that the tech *should* have put a filter on there to block that stuff out but some places don't do it.

For the most part yes, unless the provider has moved to all digital.

That's what I thought and it makes sense. If they have to connect the line to the home to provide Internet, I think that would open up the home to basic broadcast cable as well. The tech told me that otherwise, they have to put in a special filter to block the tv, and that the cost of the filter, labor, etc. just isn't worth it for a $25 a month internet line. they're just not supposed to say anything to the customer about it being available.

We have a filter or something on our line. Got a big ol purty 40 foot tall antenna stand leftover from the back when that helps out though.

By cable TV are we talking just their base level 20-30 some odd channels? If so that makes sense.

they can install a filter so you don't get the channels but sometimes they don't.

Yea I have cable internet and they didn't install a filter and I got basic cable. Used that for about a year but have satellite now.

I read something a while back stating cable providers in the US were required to offer analog cable until 2015? Anyone else remember seeing this? I could be wrong.

Yes, as others have said.
I had basic cable free for a couple years until a tech came by and discovered it and filtered it out.
The guy who installed my TW Roadrunner internet service, tipped me off inadvertently. So I put a splitter on the line and connected my TV as well as the cable modem.

HD conversion is still set for 2012 at this time. I am not sure how cable providers would provide HD over analog cable.

To answer the OP: no. TV is completely separate from internet. The cable companies put a filter in to block video if you don't pay for it. Most of the time its cheaper to get basic cable along and internet instead of just internet though. I know right now Charter offers internet and basic cable cheaper than they offer just internet.

So basically your tech was too lazy to put the filter in.

Not posting as an employee or representative of any cable company.

Seems like it, but the pricing structure with Comcast around here is pay the ~10 for basic service or your internet is at the non-customer rate which is ~10 more than the "customer" rate. So it all ends up being the same.

With Charter it was like $3 extra to get basic cable with internet so why not. But with TWC I have some work special so it's only internet. I don't have a TV but I have hooked a VCR to my monitor and I've only gotten 2-3 channels. With that same setup and actually having cable I've got every channel so it appears I am filtered on TWC. 🙁 What's this QAM stuff about?

My filter mysteriously disappeared once, and a few months later a new one appeared followed by a letter. Not sure how they audited it.

Reflections on those frequencies.
