I just passed the fight with the brumak after the bridge, so far this is not blowing me away at all. It is suprisingly average actually, I have yet to try multiplayer

For me Gears has always been nothing but a coop game. I loved going through the first two with a friend, and I can't wait to do it for the third. The single player and multiplayer otherwise are worthless to me. Do you prefer either of them?

Yeah, single player campaign is underwhelming. Much more fun coop. I also love horde mode online with friends and family.

Yes, I thought Acts 3 and 4 kind of lagged but Act 5 was excellent. As mentioned above, more fun when played with at least one other person.

Gears 2 and Gears 3: $60 map packs to Gears 1.

It's fun and all, like playing a coop arcade game with a friend from start to finish... for the 100th time... kind of fun. I have 1 and 2 and will probably end up with 3 from the used bin.

But it is what it is: cheap level addons built out of 5 year old recycled content and assets from an outdated game resold to you for the full price of 3 full games.

Standard repackaged output to be expected from today's "dollar signs in the eyes and nothing else" game industry.

Don't worry, if 4, 5, 6, or 7 coming out next month produce lower sales, they will drop the Gears franchise like a bad habit and well see more Rockband and Madden games again. Maybe Call of Duty 19 will be out by Christmas!

They're all boring without friends IMO. Luckily I played most of the first 2 with buddies so it was a good time.

It's been the most fun I've had with a game in a long time. I really enjoyed the story and am completely fine with it being a cover shooter like the first 2. This one is so much more refined. Pushing their release date and their beta really helped and shows. We can only hope BF3 and MW3 could be as good at release, RAGE sure isn't..that's for sure.

MAN I hope you guys are right. I bought it to play coop with my 3 sons. So this old guy has been practicing the campaign.... On normal....
Pretty much a cake walk so far. the TEAM is so damn efficient. I have YET to revive someone as they do it for me. Have I died? Sure but its when I get stupid and start playig like Rambo.
And as long as I trigger an event. They come in and kick ass.
LOL as this is my first gears game I picked up a longshot. Friggin "hint message" showed for like 2 seconds. Spent the next 4 minutes tryig to figure out how to zoom.
SUCKS no basic instruction book. I dont need War and Peace... Give me the conntrols written out at least.

First 4 person game is tomorrow night.

I think you MAY be right as I had similar feelings/thoughts with Dead Island.
My one son and his GF are on my "Dead Island" play night. Again, for practice, I played around in SP... I was like MEH, LFD was a touch better.
Coop.. Niiiiice. I play the Tank/Meat shield. As I have so few gaming skills. I run them over with my Rhino Charge and my son maxed out his "Skull crushing stomp" and his GF is the knife expert....So we are pretty damn efficient ourselves.

That's awesome, and that's what these games are all about. Having fun with a bunch of fam and friends. Hate people that complain that the game doesn't have the story or depth of Bioshock or Deus Ex... c'mon. That's not what this is about. Those games are great in their own right.

REALLY good point.
Take the game for WHAT it is.
Borderlands is another good one.
SP was fun. For me anyway.
MP. ON POINT.
Its also like every game being compared to Baulders...
You know what? There will only be ONE Baulders, thats it.
And plus, I dont WANT another Baulders. I want the designers to come up with the NEXT level of gaming goodness.
Know what I miss? Do you rememeber how the Wing Commander story line played out? Lose this mission you went down this path. the Kilrathi (sp?) were stronger, had more ships... Something. But the next game play game was dependent upon your missions. I thought LA Noire premise was off the hook. BUT.....EVEN if I totally screw up an interogation. The game moves forward in the same story line. That sucks.
Sigh... hand me my cane and shawl.....
I guess I can say.... Back in the day.........

I've heard that the new Rainbow Six will be like this, where what happens in the mission has an outcome and changes the next mission. These kind of games would make me want to play a second time through the story, but even games that say they have a system like this (ME2) leave a lot to be desired. It is basically all the same with a few small differences at the end.

??? I didnt know ME2 worked like that?
SUCKS if you end up in the same place at the end with MINOR diffs.
If I rememebr correctly, there were 3 different endings for the early WC's.
But, it could be old age and gilded glasses that make me think like that.

I'm currently replaying Gears 3 campaign with a couple of friends, and it is MUCH better then playing through on single player. Plus we are taking our time hunting down all the relics/cogs and exploring everything. I hope they come out with some DLC exploring Griffin. Ice T needs to be in more games LOL

UPDATE. First multiplayer last night. WOW..... JUST WOW....
Campaign is up 3 notches. Really. Your AI teamies are too overpowered. You almost get a Rambo feeling while playing. Humane buddies. NEVER felt that way.
So we played Campaign 8 to 10. Just completed the "Bridge scene" and two of them had to leave. So the one son and I played HORDE. HOE LEE SHEET.
So much better than playing horde alone (which I did for practice). We made it to level 10 then the host quit so we get disconnectwed. So we started again. 5 guys. My son and I and 3 others. One guy dropped around level 12.... Another dropped at level 18. The 3rd guy (Who I presumed was the host) DIED in level 20 but was super cool and let me and my son finish. Which we did. BOSS LEVELS ROCK.
The game saves stats every 10 levels. SO I tip my hat to him.
To sum it up.... Unreal. UNREAL action and fun.

PS anyone suggest picking up 1 or 2? I hear 2 is WAY better. OR... Should I just not bother?

I enjoyed both games, especially the co-op. You can get them both pretty cheap. I think they even sell them both as one game/collection if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah, you can get the Gears of War Triple Pack for $20 - $30. Has Gears 1, Gears 2 and all DLC for Gears 2.

The biggest thing I notice is how much easier Gears 2 and then 3 are in campaign mode. I really struggled at many points in the first game, but it was easy to get through 3 without a single death or running out of ammo on regular difficulty. I can always bump the difficulty up, but there are newer games already coming out and I don't have the motivation to do the campaign again.

i've noticed that with pretty much any sequel in the past decade. they always feel easier and in multiplayer mode too usually.

played horde last night with a group of friends, starting with 3, ending with 5, from 1-27 when the host messed up trying to invite a friend and booted us back to the lobby. we then started from 21 and went all the way through 50. was so much fun! took us about 4 hours lol. we were on casual too. could not imagine doing this on a hard difficulty.

For sure, the ending and plot differences arent unnoticable in mass effect, though i do also wish they'd fleshed out somehwat larger differences in the core plot. Your actions and decisions do have more impact in side quests and character development though.

I'm glad people are finding coop and multiplayer more fun. A group of friends and I did beast mode on insane last night. It really was a lot of fun.

I got through all 50 levels on normal with some friends and made it through 34 on hardcore before we ran out of time. So much fun.

Update..... Easy one. Thursday Nights..... LOVING IT. Me, 3 sons, campaign till ~ 10 PM or so. Horde till midnight. OUTSTANDING. Here is my issue. I AM SO WRAPPED UP IN THE CAMPAIGN. Now, just to practice, I played the first few chapters solo in 3. My teamies, which were all bots. Made the game easy. But still a great story lie. So that is my issue. I miss the story line. I hate having to wait till next Thursday to play. And we have agreed not to campaign aloe so no one says WOW, wait till you see whats next"... And so far we are all agreeing to it.

Is GEARS 2 worth it SOLO for the campaign? GOTY is on some crazy sale.... so its not the cash, its just the effort.
LOL Last night (Rememeber, I am old) in Campaign, I picked up a RETRO lancer. A tad more distance and a bit more pop. I went to Chainsaw a guy (As I am a close quarter butcher LOL) And I am screaming into the headset "MY CHAINSAW WON'T START WHAT IS... OH CRAP..... REVIVE ME. HELP CRAWLING YOUR WAY. PICK DAD UP..."
Umm Dad, Retro no Chainsaw. You hit "Y" and run... Bayonet style. WELL THAT SUCKS. So another question....Retro Lancer... Retro 1 or 2? That alone could make me decide. If no chainsaw in 2... WELL THAT SUCKS.
And how is the AI in 2? Decent? In 3, its pretty impresssive.

2 was the least fun campaign of the 3, IMO of course. Chainsaw lancer is in 1&2, retro is not. That is a new edition for the latest installment.

Since you dig the chainsaw, you may like 2's campaign more than I did; it is often required to complete tasks. I just felt like they added certain levels to 2, simply for the sake of variety/mixing things up a bit. For me, they just ended up being irritating, instead of fun.

Both 1&2 are fun over all, but 1 has a different "feel" if you will. They changed the way some of the cover system in stuff worked. MP was more basic in 1 as well.

Still, I have been a Gears head since reading about it well before the first game hit. Pre-ordered, immediately did co-op, and was hooked. So, I think the entire series is a must have. But, like many franchises, going in reverse order will highlight some of the flaws more.

Gears 2 was forgettable for me. Then again the second part of any trilogy feels that way to me. The story is a bridge so the introduction and conflict all feel the same plus it lacks the big memorable ending.
