Does GA-8PE667 Ultra **2** have same memory issues as predecessor?

Hey guys,

As posted in the News forum, the GA-8PE667 Ultra 2 is now becoming available to the masses. I mean, if I can find it here locally, you know it's getting out there! *smirk*

Anyways, what I was wondering though is if someone has any experience with it, or has heard/read any reviews talking about whether Gigabyte has addressed the memory issues that plagued the first board, that is, the Ultra?

Any help would be appreciated.

I have the board, it's just sitting here.

I'll probably get it fired up this weekend (still waiting on some more pieces)

It looks real nice

But I only have one stick of ddr right now anyway, if you're wondering about the more-than-one-dimm problem

but if it's any consolation, the board layout seems very different than the regular ultra, so maybe it's different

I don't know.

what I'm really worried about is the memory clock divider, as highest is x2.5 (4:5), which is wierd.

Then it can't support ddr333 for 400fsb cpu's, and I can't use my corsair xms3500 to its full potential

hopefully either a bios update or even easytune4 will fix it

I don't have the Ultra 2 or even the Ultra, but I have the normal GA-8PE667 and I don't have any memory issues with my 2 sticks of Kingston PC3200 memory running at 420MHz. What exactly are these issues?

Hey Goi,

That sounds awesome... However, that would make you the second person who's been able to achieve such results. A member by the name of Orien7144 being another.

The memory issue *I* myself were referring to was the fact that the Ultra was supposedly only able to run memory at 333MHz (or 400 for that matter) with only one of the 3 memory banks occupied. In fact, Orien's rig indicates he only had one stick. But you're saying you have two, and that also - PC3200. So I wonder if the problem is isolated to the "Ultra" version of the board...

Another thing: Snowwie, I'm quite a novice when it comes to overlocking... but if you OC'd your CPU, wouldn't you be able to do so to the point where it's running at / higher than 133MHz? If so, wouldn't that mean you're able to run the memory at 333Mhz?

Hmmn, actually now that you've mentioned it, I think I did read a few reviews that briefly mentioned that kind of memory issue. Still, I have no major problems on my rig. Perhaps it is indeed an Ultra problem...the layout of the normal and Ultra version is slightly different AFAIK.

I'm running a P4 2.4(b0) @ 3060Mhz (1.6V) on my new 8PE667 Ultra with 512Mb Corsair XMS PC3200 @ 425Mhz (2.7V) with 2-5-2-2 timings :) .

The only problem at FSB 170Mhz is that it won't "warmboot" at this speed :( . A coldboot is no problem at al. Warmboot is (on my config) only possible with FSB-speeds of 160Mhz and lower. It's a shame Gigabyte doesn't give you more Voltage options to get that little extra out of your components. I hope a new bios-version will tackle this problem.

Hey Crasher,

Is your CPU a 400 or 533 FSB?

***UPDATE: So I called Gigabyte today... Spoke to someone in Tech Support and buddy told me after expressing utter shock and surprise that as far as he knows, ALL the 8PE667 boards are cool running memory at 333MHz with all banks filled. That he's NEVER heard of any RMA (etc) indicating that an enduser was unable to use more than one stick of PC2700. Perhaps he should take a look at the AT article, huh?

*smirk*

I think I'm gonna see if I can pick up a new CPU with 533 FSB. (Incidentally, anyone interested in a non-OC'd, babied P4-1.8 Retail CPU? 512 cache, 4 months old, etc...)

@Styler2k: It's a 533Fsb P4 2.4b (stepping b0) I didn't get a C1 but with this CPU I can't complain. :)

styler,

what I meant by that was that most mobos give a 3:4 memory clock divider so that people with 400fsb cpus can really push their ram speeds higher.

though the board supports ddr333, and (remember, the we are assuming no overclocking) you put in a 400fsb cpu, you can only get ddr200 (1:1) or ddr266 (4:5). You need a 533 fsb cpu to take advantage of ddr333 (4:5) (remember, we are assuming no overclock)

I heard easytune4 gives you a lot of options with overclocking though, so I don't know

Wow that's a good overclock. I returned my 8pe667 ultra back to Fry's and corsair xms 3200 after only getting 2.7 with my 2.4b c1 stepping CPU... but then i didn't increase the voltage as much as you did... guess I will go get it again and try out increasing the voltage. Can you post your exact settings? Thanks!

Are you using a retail cpu with the included hsf?
