i heard there was a new regulation that ALL luggage must be searched now (even non-checked bags), therefore making it longer to fly

i'm takin a flight tomorrow morning, so this info is crucial

No, the planes go the same speed as before.

Might take longer to get on the plane, though.

I just flew. You just need to have your bags checked 1 hour before your scheduled departure time. I'd suggest getting to the airport at the very least 1.5 hours before your departure time.

It's really no big deal. Just remember that if you wish to lock your bags, you'll have to stay with them as they are searched, or the locks will be cut off.

I'm asking for someone with NO bags to check.

I'm flying for one day and have my laptop bag only. Before I could take the Boston to NY delta shuttle that I could arrive like 20 minutes beforehand and have plenty of time.

Has this changed?

do you have to get your boarding pass/ticket at the ticket counter before you go through security?

if you go with the e-ticket....you shouldn't have a problem just doing that, and walking through the checkpoint. depending on the airport and how busy it is, that would be the only real line you'd be waiting in.

Actually there is probably more pollution in the air today, therefore the wind resistance is more, causing the plane to slow down a fraction. But then again, their speedometer (whatever it's called for planes) probably makes up for it.

Just flew this past weekend. One airport had the bomb detection machines where they run something over your baggage and then put that in the machine. The other had the larger ones that scan your baggage completely.

There was a slight increase in line time for the first one. You hand them the bag, they scan it, and then they hand it to the ticket agent. You are not allowed to touch it at that point without supervision. Basically all you can do then is lock the bag (which is what I did).

The other airport, I noticed no delay. But I was unable to lock the bag since the bomb detection was in the baggage area, not the checkin area.

At security, they are a bit better then they were. I was stupid and forgot to put my keys in my checked baggage. Subsequently, I lost my little keychain swiss army knife since I wasn't able to take it on the plane (damn knife on it is less than an inch long). The wait there didn't seem any longer than before, but I was traveling at non peak times.

One thing I noticed is that they seem to have stopped the random searches at the gate.

Flew into Sky Harbor from RDU over the holidays.

Raleigh-Durham - Took about 10 minutes to check my bags, another 20 minutes waiting in a line to get to the metal detector line, 10 more minutes in that line, then about a 20 minute wait on the airplane

Phoenix - 10 minutes to walk the length of the airport - 5 minutes standing in line for the metal detector. I beeped, so I got patted down and wanned..my watch, a ring, the rivets on my jeans, the eyelets on my hiking boots. Had to send my shoes back through the metal detector...so all in all an additional 10 minutes there. Another 5 minute walk to the boarding gate, then another 20 minute wait for the plane.

I would definitely get to the airport an hour before the flight...especially if you are flying out from an international airport.

They seem to be going pretty quick, actually. It just depends on your departing airport. As long as you're not starting somewhere REALLY busy, you'll be fine. If you're flying from a larger airport, give yourself and hour or so extra. If you're leaving from a medium/small sized airport, you should be fine as long as you're not flying at a peak time.... Afternoon flights are your best bet for shorter lines.

Depends a lot on the Airport also. Miami is a NIGHTMARE while others are barely noticeable. Frisked my girlfriend 3 times and then found a very lethal corkscrew in her carry on. :D

Time: Up 20-50%

Aggravation: Through the roof !!!

I'm not sure. I was dropping my mom and my bro at newark a few weeks ago and it took the same amount of time. Even if they're searching the bags they're doing it somewhere inside, and they're doing it fast.

Thing is, the new stuff started on Jan 1st. Anything before then doesn't really count.

It was Jan 5th. I guess "few weeks ago" wasn't very accurate :)

Getting through the line in Albany NY only took me 10 minutes. They don't open and check ALL the baggage, they just do an explosive residue check. If it suspects something then they check it. Otherwise you just go right through.

We flew out just before they started implementing it. Would of thought Albany would have bought those big luggage scanners with the amount of traffic the airport gets. We flew home after the 1st of the year though and they did it at the airport we flew home from. I suspect if it had been busy at the time we would have been waiting a looong time.

Spooner, give yourself extra time. They will have you pull the laptop out and they will scan it along with anything in your pockets. Give yourself over an hour. Depending on the lines through the checkpoint you could be there long enough to miss your flight if you arrive 20 minutes before.

If you can get your E-Ticket quick and easy or have a paper ticket its not slow. I usually dont check bags, and it takes me all of 10-15 to get to my gate, that includes getting scanned everytime at security because there is always something I have that sets off the metal detector... shoes, metal buttons, whatever. This is at O'Hare, one of the busiest airports out there. They do a good job there.
