Mark, maybe watch the "3d real-time demo" posted at ATI.com called "The Project". Since Far Cry doesn't have a very good introduction sequence, this seems to be a worthy replacement for one. It won't spoil the game, in fact watching that before playing will probably let you start off and actually have some idea whats going on.

When i first played FC, the intro didn't provide much of an explanation what was going on, where I was, who the baddies are, etc. It was pretty bad...

i'd love to . . . . but i could finish the game by the time my slow-ass dial-up connect finished the d/l :p

i have an idea what it is about from reading the reviews (some here) and have decided a crappy anytime 'save' is better than no save at all (or checkpoints) ;)

when 'retail' finds the game ~$20 i will buy it . . . . right now i am partway thru Red Faction and am not too impressed . . . but still have Rainbow Six 3: Ravenshield, Tomb Raider: AOD & 007 Nightfire unopened (they are from bargain bin or HW bundles . . . . and i never finished Dragon's Lair 3D: RttL, or the Preditor mission in AvPII . . . . so i ain't hurtin' for games to play :)

there there is the Replay of HL2 and ThieF III . . . even DeuSex - IW . . . .
(IMO, these three DO have some replay value)

don't know if i would re-play DX2 because the graphics were so bad they made me wince... hehe. I *did* like the Physics, even if it was a half-ass implementation. HL2 physics, on the other hand, is a FULL-ass implementation. lol.

i would probably like Thief3 better, that had an extra 3 mo. dev time so it seems to be a bit more polished.

Maybe I'll get Chronicles of Riddick (new game)... curious to see what sort of engine they hacked together, supposed to be very cutting edge.

Did you play DE:IW with the patch? the graphics in Thief III were superior - especially "bloom" and shadows. However, DE-IW wasn't "bad" . . . . better then anything the Quake III engine can do or certainly better then Unreal II . . . . i think we're getting spoiled by FC, HL2 and Diii (gfx only!)

i think i played every inch of Thief III's little maps (even read the walkthroughs after finishing) don't think i missed ANYthing. :)
(although i could "sneak" this time) :D

OTOH, there are SO many twists in DE-IW, i could almost make it another game entirely.

Ditto for HL2

However, i will NEVER play any variation of Doom iii - ever! those guys at id haven't a clue how to make a fun modern game (other then it's engine). :disgust:

I personally thought they were quite nice. A little cartoniish at times but nice. Lighting and shadowing were very well done.

What the heck are you waiting for? :p Far Cry beats HL2 and is more replayable due to enemy AI being great and many situations having multiple and highly variable methods of winning. If you paid through the nose for HL2, surely you can afford half that for a better game? :D

IF it does work correctly, i want to get FC (even though the demo does NOT impress me - perhaps it was because i was running a DX8 card - Radeon 8500 - at the time - my 9800xt will provide all the DX9 goodies).

I found the demo "buggy" compared to the real game. The real deal ran a lot better/smoother for me. I was able to crank up the settings on the real game moreso than I was on the demo. When you get it, set "environment" to ultra-high (or whatever the highest setting is) that way the fish & birds will appear. they look pretty cool and are good for target practice.

I found the physics in this game a lot of fun too. Best in any game I played so far (haven't played HL2 yet)

thanks Craig . . . i'm on it! (waiting forFC to drop to sub$20) . . . .
You're gonna LOVE hl2 :)

:D

(it's what diii isn't) ;)

Far Cry < $20

i meant <$20 "retail", not fleabay :p

and with shipping it is more . . . . .

anyway, thanks for your replies . . . . .

I wouldn't knock eBay for a need such as yours.
A search of "completed auctions" on far cry reveals that it can be easily had for about 10 bucks plus 5 dollars shipping. An excellent way to procure this game for those on a budget. With this particular game you don't need to worry about not being able to play online because someone else is using the CD key since there is no MP.

there was a time when you couldn't post "Ebay" on AT . . . . it was a 'forbidden word' . . . . just a 'habit', not a 'knock'.

But i still much prefer to buy at retail . . . . IF i really wanted it super-cheap, i'd give the business to our own FS/T forums ;)
(heck, i sold my copy of Doom iii here .. . . after "warning" the buyer 1st, of course, what i thought of it):D

As i pointed out earlier, i am not hurting for games to play as i still have some unplayed from bargain bin and HW bundles . . . . i bet FC'll be ~$20 at retail next month . . . . somewhere.

If ebay was a forbidden word, that was plain silly.
I can see them not wanting people to advertise auctions. One reason why I posted a link to "completed auctions" only, which is a useful research tool to test the current market value of an item.
A lot of AT'ers now post a link to their eBay feedback history in their sig along with their heatware.

DE2 is a dissappointment when compared to DE1, which was ahead of its time by about -- oh 10 years or so. :p

Lighting and shadowing were good, yes. The textures were low quality, however and the model detail was pretty pathetic. The "community texture pack" improved the quality of some textures (models) slightly, in the sense that it brought it up to par with most late-2003 games. Unfortunately it lowered fps by about 25% on most systems. If I turn it off, the graphics make me wince again so I left it installed for my entire play through.

IMHO the one company which was able to "mod" the Unreal engine to allow it support all the latest graphical features really well was Ubisoft. The splinter cell series looks great and has all the neat dynamic lighting/shadowing features we want. And it performs great on most systems AFAIK. haven't tried SCPT yet...

No it's not unless you were expecting DE "redone". It is different and excellent in its own right. ;)

nonsense . . .. its Waay better then anything the Quake III engine ('03) can produce and leaps ahead of Unreal II ('03) :p

i dunno, DE:IW's graphics are sufficiently "good" that the gameplay "covers" them (unless you dislike the gameplay in which case you notice the gfx shortcomings). Personally i liked the gfx in DEIW (and more so in Thief DS) and ran everything @ 10x7 on 'hi' and 'max' and 'bloom' (even a little 2xAA) with only minor slowdowns on my 9800xt (just No v-synch which i rarely need or use, anyway)
