So any tips on what I should do and whom I should side with? My current strat seems to be to steal anything thats not nailed down.

I've sided with NCR on first play through (not sure I'll do another play through)

I like running around and raping Legion for now, so that's good enough for me.

After getting to the Strip, though, and discovering piles more factions and more convoluted missions and story arcs, I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to finish. Just too many decisions to make. :D

The thing I have always liked about the Fallout games, though, is the atmosphere that they create. I know some people are sick of the post-apocalyptic settings in games, but I love them--especially when they are done well. There is nothing repetitive or tacked-on about the worlds that Fallout games create. I find them to be completely immersive, and very much a realistic, living version of what one may expect from such world.

My problem is wanting to find/do every dang thing possible in this enormous game! The main mission is relatively small, but there's a MILLION other things optional!

The game takes a while to pick up IMO but once you find some outposts/towns fast travel becomes a better way of getting around.

Did anybody pull Mr. House out of his life support chamber and kill him? Highlight of the game for me lol

Yeah, when I've completed all my current quests, I'll just start walking in one direction until I find something! Then I start working on the quests for another settlement (or just kill everyone, depending on who owns the place).

Don't think I could side with the Legion (too much of a boy scout for that) but I think I'll help Yes-Man or Mr. House on my next playthrough. My first one is my "main" one though, basically lawful good helping the NCR and trying to get everyone to be friends.

To answer the question on if I research games before I purchase them, the answer to that is generally NO for steam sales. I watch a couple trailers and make a purchase.. LOL.. Honestly if the game is cheap enough I'm not too concerned about throwing away a few $$$.. I'm giving the game a bit longer.

I think Fear No Evil is a very typical gamer. Way to go jerk :D

I'm a very atypical gamer. I almost never buy a game until it's been out a year because I REALLY hate buying a game that's been hyped to the max only to realize they've used the public as their Beta testers. By the time I buy a game it usually has been a goty, comes with a boatload of dlc and is less than half the price of the release copy.

It just goes to show, there's different ways to enjoy games. Although, I do wish all the early buyers didn't support the poor games and business practices of many publishers.

Damn I really should have bought this or FO3 original during the most recent Steam sale. Heck it's been very cheap on several of the past Steam sales. Now when I want it it's regular price which I could still buy no prob it just seems pretty foolish when I know FO3 and FO3:NV will be very cheap in the next few months.

Just to bump my own thread, I tuck with it and I'm now ~45 hours into the game. Definitely got better, but now I am finding myself becoming too obsessed with finding certain items or making sure I clear every location of every valuable item. I also feel like I have ADD because it seems like I will start a quest, which will require me to go somewhere else, and then I start another quest there, which requires me to go somewhere else, then I start a new quest there. :)

Starting to get the hang of things though.

Just wait until you start hoarding loot. I can't count how many trips I made back to my house in Megaton (FO3, if you haven't played it) so I could store dozens of suits of armor and weapons. I had more crap crammed in my locker than I would ever use, but I felt the need to collect everything of value that I came across. Never know when you might need to use an almost broken piece of crap rifle to fix the one you're carrying...

My name is BoberFett, and I'm a hoarder.

there's teh rub.

I think I'm about the same amount of time into it, playing it non-stop, but haven't picked it up in almost two weeks or more. As much as I enjoy these games...there is simply too much depth for me, now, and the type of commitment I give to games. I think it's a steam thing. I used to get a game, play it exclusively, maybe get another game in 2 months or so.

fucking steam.

but yeah, as great as this game is, I'm not sure I will ever finish it. storage space (I am a video game loot hoarder of the worst order) and quest collecting/completionist mentality makes these games far too stressful for me to pick up after a certain point, heh.

Yeah I have hoarded a lot of stuff in Novac (preferred over the suites you can get in New Vegas since it's quicker to get to). Got many suits of combat and power armor in the wardrobe, dozens of bottles of Sunset Sarsaparilla and Nuka-Cola in the fridge, gobs of ammo and weapons (mostly uniques that I would never sell) in the safe, and way more parts than I'll ever need or use in the footlocker. And my character always has 200+ lbs on him... this despite having the Pack Rat perk (all <2lb items weigh half as much) and Strong Back (+50 carry weight). Oh, and I'm playing with Project Nevada which has a backpack item (+50 carry weight, -2 agility).

Old World Blues has a new trait (which you can take when you start a new character or add when you play the DLC) called Hoarder that gives you extra carry weight at the expense of stat decreases if you have less than 160 lbs on you.

I spend way too much time juggling items. There are only a few workbench and campfire recipes I use, but I compulsively hoard random parts in case there's something I want to make a lot of. I need to put limits on myself, maybe with my next character, so I spend more time playing and less time looting.

Once I play Dead Money with this character I think I'll stop collecting weapon repair kit parts.

One thing I like about the game is how they let you do some seemingly absurd things like stack C4 around the room and nobody seems to be concerned with how you are dropping C4 at their feet, pulling out a detonator and walking into the other room. LOL.

Meanwhile if you get a pair of binoculars and point them at someone nearby, they'll act as though you're aiming a gun at them!

I like reverse pickpocketing people and dropping a grenade in their pants.

Purchased it during the recent Steam sale.. Was expecting to load it up and start playing.. but suddenly I had to pick all sorts of character attributes, skills, perks.. holy CRAP.. 30 minutes to just start the damn game.. Ok ok ok ok.. picked stuff, went into the first city and started walking around.. apparently random strangers are willing to give you weapons and let you steal all their shit.. Apparently its OK for me to clean out the bar's cash register when I need money.

So I start doing some of the early 'tasks'.. it teaches you a little, but still there is all sorts of stuff they don't explain. Maybe I had to play the previous games to understand it? Checking out some online guides seems to make it even more complex.. magazines, implants, leveling up.. Thought this was more of a FPS. I guess i was wrong.

Does it get better? Should I plod through the mundane (Walk over here, pick this up, walk over there, pick that up, do some voodoo over a fire) missions and get to the better stuff? Also what is strange is I have no idea who are the good people, which side I should support, people I should help.. looks like I have a lot of freedom in choosing sides but I have no clue as to who or why I should help one over the other.

You've pretty much summed up my experience with the game. :\
