Does Exchange Server require Active Directory?

I'm setting up a little server here, mostly for learning. Win2K Server has been installed, and I am playing with Active Directory (and finding it all a little over my head right now).

I want to install Exchange 2000 to manage contacts between client machines.

So, do I need Active Directory?

yes. exchange 2000 does require AD.

don't know if this is an option or not but exchange 5.5 runs very well on 2000 server
and doesn't require AD.. just a thought

Exchange 2K does require AD, but if you are already playing with AD, I say go for it. We run 5.5, but I set up 2K on a test server and it integrates with AD well. I haven't had much time to play with it, but it seems pretty cool.
