I don't see why they (dentists) do it.

Mine were pulled years ago and I don't think it was necessary.

Jackass dentists.

Edit: forgot to pluralize "molar" in Message Title.

Are you talking about wisdom teeth? No reason to pull them OR molars if they're not causing problems, but removing wisdom teeth is pretty normal for most dentists, as a precautionary thing.

I think it is pretty standard to get wisdom teeth pulled if there can be a potential problem. I had all four of mine pulled when I was 18; they were impacted and started to cause a little noticeable pain - mom wasn't about to let those screw thousands of dollars worth of braces when I was a kid.

Many people get their wisdom teeth pulled. Many peoples' jaws aren't actually large enough to accomodate the extra set of teeth. I had all of mine pulled at 14 because 3 were growing in crooked and the 4th was straight sideways.

That last one broke as they were pulling it out. I had chipmunk cheeks for 3 weeks...but never got dry sockets. My sister had dry sockets though. Remember the pain she was in, I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.

My Mom and another friend, OTOH, both had theirs grow in just fine.

Why is your dentist a jackass? It's the 3rd molars that were extracted. It's better to get them out now then later. He's walking with your money all the way to the bank. Who's the jackass now?

Funny you should ask that. I had mine pulled last Wednesday.

It wasn't by a dentist though. It was by an oral surgeon.

That's not the practice from the 'old school of dentistry'. Doctors trained in the 1940's pull molars and wisdom teeth as common practice.

Actually I don't think dentists do it. When I went I had to see a maxcillofacial (sp? fancy name for oral) surgeon.

Unfortunately, in Western countries, extracting wisdom teeth is a well planned conspiracy by the damn dentists (my uncle is one and he made a fortune from it). There is no scientific study showing preventive extraction of wisdom teeth is helpful with oral development. One should NOT cave in to his/her dentist's bullsh!t and get it removed when there's no evidence of potential future problems. Don't let your dentist touch your wisdom teeth unless there's a potential future problem, you risk nerve damage, which I'll tell you is not a very pretty thing.

I only had mine pulled because my teeth were starting to squeeze together a little, and the pressure was a slightly painful.

Don't forget, early dentistry was often times performed by barbers!

I got mine pulled back when I was in the navy, but that was a preventative thing they did for anyone that was a sub volunteer. Nothing like being in the middle of a 3 month underwater cruise, and having problems with your wisdom teeth! :(

Oral Maxillofacial surgeons are dentists who specialize in oral maxillofacial surgery : )

Dentists are licensed and capable and routinely do pull 3rd molars, aka wisdom teeth. But many refer cases with potential for complications to oral surgeons.

It is possible that 3rd molars can erupt and not cause any problems, however they generally are pulled not as a preventative measure, but rather the procedure is done based on a diagnosis of: will problems occur if the teeth are left in and can these problems be prevented if they are extracted?
