At 3 jobs ago it was a guy who was a fellow sysadmin. Nice guy, but a know it all, and it drove me nuts. 2 jobs ago, in a tech team of 100+, it was ONLY this one guy who was a fellow co-worker... drove me absolutely crazy. There was one in my last job, and in my current job, it's a co-worker who feels arguing with you for hours over your opinion on something is much better than actually getting the job done.

Seriously, these people need to be shot.

Yes, but they are everywhere not only in the workplace. In outside of the workplace, you can usually avoid/not deal with them.

This one guy at work is like that. He always has to be right, and if he isn't, he changes the argument so that he is. He'll say "Oh, well I meant <a specific subsection of bla bla bla, which is unrelated to the discussion at hand>, not <bla bla bla>, so in <bla bla bla's> case, you're correct." And he does this all day long. We all know that he's just backpedaling, but I don't think he knows that we know.

I've learned to just ignore him when he's wrong or if I don't agree with him, because I'd rather avoid the ear full on how my opinion is wrong or how factual statements are wrong.

It's not that they know everything and want to argue with you, it's the fact that you are stupid and they are simply trying to educate you. "That guy" seems to be the only person who cares enough to help you and you don't even realize it. Pitiful.
