Does dog food go bad, after 1 year, it's been opened.

So whenever my sister goes out of town I'm left dog sitting her dogs. About this time last year I took care of them. They forgot to bring over food and I have a big zip lock bag (I didn't fully zip it so air/moisture got inside) of the food last year. I've been working on my cars and have taken them apart and only have my motorcycle now so getting a big bag of food isn't an option. It does smell stale though. But these dogs have literally eaten rocks from the yard so their stomachs are pretty tough.

I don't know. Never had DRY dog food last that long but obviously if moisture gets into it, it can spoil. I can only assume you're talking about dry dog food.

It goes stale, not bad.. as long as it isn't damp, or infested with anything. As long as it still smells like dog food, I wouldn't worry about it too much. I'm sure the dog has eaten far, far worse things.

I'm assuming this is just some kinda emergency situation? I probably wouldn't be mean enough to feed the whole bag to them, but for a day or two so I could get to the store, sure.

The only way to be sure is to glue some on your balls with peanut butter. If he eats it and doesnt get sick, then it was probably OK.

lol? Just buy the little cans they sell at the stores for like 2 dollars, those keep em fed for like a day, or just simply buy a medium bag...how long is your sister out of town? a year or two?

Will go stale and lose some of it's nutritional value. Odds are though, the dog won't care. May get diarrhea though.

A small bag of food will cost you probably $5-10.

Dry dog food seems to have an oily feel to it, at least the kind I feed my dogs. Based on this I have to assume that there is some kind of oil in it and thus like any product that does it will eventually go rancid. The dog will know and not eat it at that point.

The oil is probably vitamin E, used as a preservative. But yeah, pretty much. You're probably smelling rancid oils if it smells "stale".

Dogs have much more resilient stomachs and immune systems than we do, though. I'd be surprised if they missed a beat because of eating it. Like I said, as long as it isn't wet, growing shit, or infested with any insects.

In high school, I had a '66 Fastback... Wish I still had it.

Dogs can eat rotting flesh and be okay. They will not be hurt by old dog food but they at some point will not eat it because we have spoiled them their whole lives with nothing but good food.

If I take my dogs to my lake house and forget to take new food and feed them some left over from last year in the closet they take a bite or two and then simply look at me. They will not eat any more the whole weekend unless I go to the store.

Ahh, yeah. Just depends on the dog I guess. Some will eat just about anything... literally. 😀

Both of my dogs are picky about food. One used to refuse dry food and I had to feed him canned. But I was able to finally find a dry food he loves.

My old ridgebacks used to eat anything you gave them. My new ridgeback will spit out treats that he doesn't like and let my other one eat it.

When I was younger I noticed a lot of older people saying this all the time about the car they owned in high school. I took it to heart and since October of 1979, the day I bought my first 66 Coupe, there has only been one month where I did not own a 66 Mustang of some sort. I bought my Shelby one month after I sold my first 66 Coupe in October of 1985.
