Does DOD2 work on CS Retail?

I have the CS Retail (my mate bought the GOTY edition and doesn't have an internet connection so gave me the CS cd so i could use it) and would like to play DOD2, as it seems to be very good from what i've read.

Will this work on the CS Retail, or will i need the original HL?

Also, if i do have to get HL, is it OK to use my mate's HL cd and key, as he doesn't use it online, or should i get it myself?

You will both get blocked from online gaming.

But, CS has a separate key that I think can be used for HL as well. Or, for example, Opposing Forces never asked me for a key since HL was already installed, so if it is the same for him, maybe you can use the OF key.

Just never, never, never use a key he has already used - maybe he will get a modem later on and play online, and then you are both blocked. Play it safe.
 
OK, i won't use his HL key, i'll see if the CS key he has given me will work with HL

He's played CS round mine since he gave it to me and has never liked it, so i guess he'll never be wanting to install CS or have the CD back, so i should be safe using the CS key for HL if i need to and it will work.

Just need to know whether DOD2 will work with CS retail 🙂

you CAN use the same cd key as your friend, even if he is using it for online play. you both just cant use it at the same time, or you'll get a cd-key in use violation and you'll just have to wait untill he's done useing it. you will not get blocked. i've used the same cd key as 4 people, and even then it only sometimes gave me the cd-key in use violation.

Your CS retail key will work for Half-Life. My friend bought the CS retail, for a CD key and I installed Half-Life, using his CD key. It works just fine and he's playing CS, DoD, etc.

vash, has your friend used specifically DOD2 on his CS retail install, and has it worked perfectly?

I believe what vash stated was that you can use the retail CS CD key for a Half-Life install.

Then you can install the DoD mod on the HL install.

That has worked for me as well 🙂

I don't think that you can install DoD with the retail CS install.
