Does disabling AGP 4x degrade performance that much?

No it doesn't. There are no material gains in performance going from AGP2X to AGP4X, so you are not really going to lose anything.

Thanks Andy that's a relief. I finally have my system rock stable at 10 x 144 (from a 1ghz t-bird) but if I enable agp 4x it goes to hell. Knowing that disabling it doesn't hurt performance is good news.
