Does Crucial always use Micron Memory chips?

I highly doubt they would ever do that.
For what it's worth, Kyle at Hardocp.com is claiming that. He could very well be on crack though.. I mean look at the name of the website, does anyone know what that means yet? heh
<< Memory of the Year. Corsair is back for their second "Hardest" as well. Corsair XMS2400 DDR SDRam has been a hell of a performer. We are still using many of the sticks we have at the DDR PC2700 level without issue. Did it cost more? Hell yes. Will you most likely not have to buy Ram for a while? Hell yes. You have to like that. As a side note Corsair is also dressing their sticks up with heatspreaders. I think they are talking about installing them on the Ram as well. No review, we use it every day in our own boxes as well as on our test rigs. Overall, let me interject this. Buy only DDR with Micron or Kingmax chips on it. Samsung, Infineon, Nanya will not handle high end DDR needs based on our experiences. Keep in mind that you will now even find Crucial DDR Ram with Infineon chips. >>

Micron would be ideal, but I've heard now you might even find Crucial brand memory with Infineon chips? :-/
Hm, nothing's impossible in the memory market 😉. Perhaps they can buy the stuff cheaper on the spot market than they can produce it, dunno...
Anyway - for SDR SDRAM I would not worry. The Infineon chips are very good, probably better than the Microns.
With DDR it's another story. Has somebody asked Crucial directly?

Funny coincidence, my Crucial order for 1.5 GB DDR PC2100 RAM came in this morning:
3 sticks of 512 MB each populated with ......Infineon Chips. I was pretty amazed since I had never seen this before.
My elderly eyes are too feeble to give you the numbers on the chips 🙁, but they are clearly Infineon.
Hope they're good...

Oh, they're good alright. Infineon is even better than Micron, I would say. I just got a 512mb stick from Crucial with the Infineon chips, and if you look they're 7ns instead of 7.5ns. That means they can go up to about 143mhz at spec. Also, I believe Infineon makes their chips on a .17 process while Micron is .18.

The explanation I've heard meshes well with the post above.
The Infineon chips I beleive have only been found on the 512MB DDR DIMMS.
I think this is because Micron doesn't make a chip yet with the bit density needed
to be able to make a 512MB DIMM.
As for Samsung Chips on 256MB DIMMS at best buy, I think someone explained
that as only on the PC100 SDR RAM... and that maybe because Micron has moved
all of it's production over to DDR RAM?? and therefore doesn't make SDR anymore?
I don't know... It's only a theory!

Reminds me of a story from history class. I believe it was between Andrew Carnegie and another railroad baron. Both competed for business from cattle ranches shipping steer to the slaughterhouses. Soon his competitor was selling his service for way below cost. So what happens? Carnegie bought as many head of cattle as he could and shipped it on his competitor's railroad.
With memory on the spot market priced below cost the last few months, I wouldn't be surprised if Micron secretly bought up some of that excess inventory.

Ah, that's interesting and a good explanation, I think!
Infineon do make pretty large modules themselves - a gig and more on a single low profile stick, apparently, although I haven't seen that "in the wild" yet. They need to have high density chips to do that 😉.
