In my dorm we had ceiling-mounted flourescent lights that were a nice, even, white color. They were quite bright and lit up the entire room evenly. For the most part, though, I preferred a desk lamp and a lamp by my bed for lighting, because I prefer it darker. I prefer indirect lighting, and I'd usually turn my desk lamp towards my desk and my bedside lamp towards the wall/ceiling. Of course I'd still use the ceiling light most of the time, but when I was in the mood to study, I'd turn it off and go to the others.

Go for some nice 10K 400W Metal Halide lamps. These have a CRI of 90+ and are very natural and BRIGHT! The newest electronic drivers allow for dimming (even electronically to simulate sunrise/sunset) and produce zero flicker. You could also make very efficient and cool panels from an array of Luxeon Stars! :)

For night time use, a few borosilicate tubes with tritium provide a very soft glow without electric or attention of any kind for >10 years. Of course to handle raw H3 sources you need to be NRC licensed. :)

Cheers!

You're not going to live in the dorms with commoners, are you?

College lighting sucks. Get ceiling lights. Get a girlfriend, and a loft that allows generous room, if you know what I mean. LOL

I don't care whether or not dorms have flourescent lights, I'm just against halogen. I don't care if they're brighter, chances are either you or someone in your building is and idiot and will end up starting a fire.

:D I can see one of the future additions to the Great Scroll: "Problems with people on scholarship, sucking up campus resources."

But seriously, college dorms run the gamut from downright plush to those barely making housing codes. In some dorms, each occupant gets one table lamp (you provide your own bulb) and a 120W ceiling lamp while in others, you get feet upon feet of ceiling-mounted fluorescents. In my opinion, those halogens have too high of a risk/lighting ratio and aren't a great investment, either for the school or student.

My dorm room came with a single 8 or 10" round flourescent in the ceiling and a diffused 18" flourescent tube that was placed in the cubby of the desk hutch (doesn't light anything more than the desktop). Needless to say, I've invested in a 100W bulb placed in a 60W rated swing-arm lamp (the type that usu. clips to a desk with a screw bracket and costs $10 or less) and a second desk lamp.
