Does college dorms have good ceiling lights?

I was browsing through the net and just read this article. Quite a few colleges are banning halogen torchieres(one of these real bright floor lamp somewhat shy of 6ft tall) because they're a fire hazard. One floor lamp of this type uses 300W. I'd say students are bringing them into their rooms, because the overhead lighting in their room sucks and they need alot of light for studying and such. Since most dorms includes electricity cost in it's rent, wouldn't you say it would be a good idea for colleges to start installing two 32W lamp four foot fluorescent(same kind in classroom/bathroom)? The school will save considerable money on utility, because the fluorescent will only use about 65W instead of 300W and much lower fire hazard. For the residents, they'll get more light than floor lamp and I'm sure they'd appreciate the extra space from not having to have floor lamps in their already small room. I'm sure a college student would care more for extra floor space than aesthetically pleasing lights.

Poll question: I think it's a great idea. What do you dorm residents think?

a few more Q's for dorm residents:

Is halogen floor lamp banned?

Does your room have a good overhead lighting?

Yeah...the lighting in the dorms was pretty crappy...it sorta forced me to study in the laundry rooms or study lounges...

That is the kind of lighting I had in my dorm room as done every room in the dorm I lived in. I actually think every dorm on campus has the same lights, but I am unsure because I have not visited every dorm.

What makes you think so?

There are crappy fluorescents(called cheapo bulk pack) as well as good fluorescent. They come in four or five different colors to choose from.(orangish white to bluish daylight)

its just very harsh light. something about natural light, or a regular light bulb that is just more more easy on the eyes. Halogen bulbs are nice too... they put out so much heat though, in a small dorm room they could really warm the place up.

maybe i've only seen the cheap lights though, i'm sure the more expensive ones are a little nicer and easier on the eyes. the ones we have here and the ones at my work suck though. and the BUZZING!!! ahhh they make me go insane.

UCLA provides for me: an overhead fluorescent light (three sticks of them... whatever they're called)

i also have a small desk lamp for when my roommate sleeps and i still wanna be up reading in my room. some of the desk shelves come with a little fluorescent light on it.

halogen lamps are banned because of the fire hazard. they do regular room inspections to make sure you don't have any contraband.

i feel we have sufficient lighting.

some people bring them into their rooms because it looks cool... great decorating pieces...

It varies. My first dorm room had a good incandescent, and an alright fluorescent light in the closet. But when the incandescent burned out and nobody could get the cover off, I decided to buy myself a new fluorescent. I happened on a great deal, a clearance of sunlight-like fluorescents (got the last one for $1.75.) It worked incredibly well, and matched the outdoor light almost exactly. But I always wanted more light. I finally got that stupid incandescent replaced like a month before I left.

I'm now in what's basically a converted motel. No overhead lights. :( I bought a 100-watt-equivalent compact fluorescent just to bring the light level up so the far end of the room would be lit. It helps.

Basically, even if there are enough lights in your room, their color isn't going to be great, fluorescent or incandescent. Would you believe the incandescents in my room are 48-watt traffic signal bulbs?

P.S. My next-door neighbor has a torch lamp. But he's not supposed to.

Well, I don't know about you, but in my case it's more like winter blues. I get depressed if I don't get enough light!

<< Here's the light in my dorm room >>

That is a decent light. This is what every dorms should have.

<< And yeah, what's with your fascination with lightbulbs? >>

The last few weeks, I've been quite particluar about proper lighting and I've just had elevated level of interest in this matter. Naturally I wanted to find out what other people considers it an ideal light.

Nope. They gave us two worthless lights (they're about 8" long flourescents, they give off really annoying yellow light) in the "study room" half, and one of the worthless lights in the bedroom. Now, this would almost make sense, except then they put in a really nice overheard flourescent in the bedroom. Its brighter than all three crappy 8" flourescents put together. They apparently screwed up the work order when the building was built, and put the bright lights in the bedroom. Go figure.

Anyway, flourescent lights are "banned", but we have one in our room that you can see while walking by, my RA has TWO of them, and pretty much every room on my floor has one.

EDIT: I meant halogens are banned

With two pairs of 3 fluorescent lights we had plenty of light in my dorm. We could definately have used more space but for the most part I can't complain. We couldn't fit a couch or anything but the room was big enough for two computer desks, bunked beds, two study desks (built into the wall) and a nightstand.

8 inches? That's really short for a fluorescent. They're generally 48" or even 96".

Why the hell is fluorescent banned?????

well, they are the little 4 tube style. I think, its been a while since I even bothered to turn them on (not that you can see them through the severely yellowed covering).

<< its just very harsh light. >>

Don't be a grandma ;).

<< something about natural light, or a regular light bulb that is just more more easy on the eyes. >>

Yay for natural light. a 5,000K(same as those crisp white lamps you see at dentists or designing rooms) fluorecent is actually closer to the sun than regular light. As you might have guessed, it costs three times as much as regular fluorescent. Regular fluorescent cost about 99cents a piece. 5,000K CRI 85 bulb costs $3 a piece.

Both regular lightbulbs and halogens have much more percentage of yellow than sunlight. I can't stand that pissy yellow light from regular light bulbs. Halogen is somewhat better though. Super white fluorescent rules!

<< Halogen bulbs are nice too... they put out so much heat though, in a small dorm room they could really warm the place up. >>

This is why I don't use them.

Obviously, you've been over exposed to 99cent cool white(a.k.a ghetto white) four foot bulbs and the sound of 1970's ballasts.
