Does Chipper Jones have any chance whatsoever to bat over .400 this year?

Nope, he's a .310 career hitter. A miracle year would be .350, there's no way he's going to scare .400 by the end of the year.

Lansford finished at .279
Boggs at .357
Alomar at .328
Helton at .372
O'Neill at .359
Dykstra at .325
Fernandez at .328
Gallaraga at .370
Carew at .339
Gwynn at .372
Walker at .366
Garciaparra at .372
Olerud at .363
Brett at .390 despite being over .400 well into September

Lots of guys have been at .400 later than this, Brett was the only guy that even got close in the last 67 years.

Chipper still at .420 as of today (June 11th). Only 9 guys have hit .400 or above later in the season, this is going to be exciting if he can keep it up!

Not gonna happen, we'll sooner see a player hit in 57 straight games before finishing .400 or more. Just watch how much his average will drop after bad games, going 0-for-3/4/5 will kill any average that high.

I remember when he was a rookie or around that time he was batting insanely high but didnt get to that 400 mark for good.

I was in Atlanta then.

It looked like he was going to be awesome so the Braves made him a franchise player for life, of course then he got "lazy".

He's just trying to increase the value of his baseball cards before he is done.

It's all about the money sadly.

Well I was just a kid then so I remember I have a few different rookie cards of his and he was a big prospect then he just kind of fell away...I was like 11 or 12 then 26 now havent thought about it since.

damn baseball strike! gwynn was at .394 on august 11 when the strike started. i know players have gone deeper still at .400 but for a guy with 8 batting titles you gotta like his chances.

Speaking of Tony Gwynn.. <insert innocuous joke about how fat he's gotten since retiring here>

I remember when he was on the Durham Bulls. Though, the Bulls are now Tampa's AAA club.

As much as I hate the Braves, it was great to be able to see all those guys come up for those incredible braves teams back in the late 80s to 90s.

Won't happen. If he's still hitting .400 in early September, he'll have an outside shot at it. A couple of 0-for's destroy a high batting average like that.

since retiring? what about the last couple of years he played?!? im surprised he didnt use the trainer's cart to get out to play right field or to get to second base on a double. but yeah, he really let himself go right after retiring.

Lazy? Kind of just fell away?

I'm not sure which Chipper Jones you and ClarkJF are talking about, but I don't think it's the one with these career stats:

CHIPPER

He's been nothing short of a first-round HoF player since 1996. The man's a stud and always has been, and he's having a year for the ages at 36. He's had an incredible career.

Does he have a chance to hit .400? Of course he does. Will he? Probably not, based on history alone.

To the poster who said someone will hit in 57 straight games before someone hits .400 again, keep dreaming. 57 in a row will never happen, and the closest anyone has come since Joe DiMaggio's 56 was Pete Rose and his 44 games in 1978. George Brett and Tony Gwynn both came VERY close to .400. No one's come very close to hitting 57.

He was tearing it up and hitting 4 for 5 or 3 for 4 in the last few games before he got injured. Whether or not he'll be able to continue that when he returns is one question. Whether or not he'll be able to stay healthy through the season to get enough bats in is the other.

The injuries for the Braves have gotten ridiculous. Smoltz gone. Hampton gone (again...dump him already). Glavine hurt yesterday. Part of their relief staff out. Kotsay out. Chipper out.

They are going to end up 10+ games out of first at the end of this road trip.

I was watching one of the Braves games a few weeks ago and the announcer (I think Joe Simpson) said this was the first year Chipper Jones actually watched & studied video of the opposing pitchers. In the past, he wouldn't bother but this year he's actually studying - so maybe that has a lot to do with his breakout season thus far. But I don't think he's going to hit .400, maybe high .370 or so.

Yup one of their best bullpen pitchers Peter Moylan out, Rafael Soriano out for a good bit, and Mike Gonzalez as well. Despite all that, I believe the Braves are 1st in the NL in ERA and 2nd in Batting Average (but due to their horrible 1 run / road game record are hovering around .500).

1 for 3 yesterday, @.419. He whiffed on a pitch thrown right down the middle- then again none of the braves were hitting that Cubs pitcher.
