Does canceling of WoW accounts result in character deletion?

If you can find a link to info about this, please provide. I am considering cancelling my account while in summer school (college) and wait for blizzard to get their act together with the honor system, wait for people to stop going crazy over honor points, play other games, get a life, etc.

It would make it much easier for me to hit the cancel button knowing that i can come back to my characters in about 3/4 months without them being deleted.

Give me $14.99 + tax and I can find out for you. :p

If you can't find a sure fire answer from someone, can try emailing Blizzard

Your character will remain. I'm not sure for how long, but I remember reading that much.

I was under the understanding that the character stays on the server for a good amount of time, definitely longer than a month. I personaly had a guy in my guild who got to 60 really quick, cancelled in January and just reactivated his account the other day, his character was obviously still on the server.

Email Blizzards wonderful support, only way you'll get a straight answer.

Yeah, it's definitely longer than a month.

Compared to other MMORPG's, I don't see why they would delete the characters after only a month. My Asheron's Call account has been inactive for over a year (no subscription) but the characters are still there.

Their current policy is that they do NOT delete characters / accounts at any time.

Obviously this policy will change at some point, but I'd guess it will be at least a year or two before that happens.

yes, it has been stated numerous times that the characters will stay forever. Also I know a couple of people that have deleted their characters ( 1 to do horde on the same server, other to resist the temptation of returning) and got them reinstated after a couple of months.

I cancelled at the beginning of February and assumed I would be able to start back up when Battlegrounds goes live. In my experience with other MMOs they usually don't delete accounts until much later that whatever limit they tell you. It makes sense to keep them around since inactive characters are a potential revenue stream and it's more likely that people will return if they don't have to start over from scratch.

well, i just canned my subscription

was so fun untill 3 things ruined the game

1. Bloodscalp was selected as a point of transfer to and our lvl 60 population tripled, overnight alliance out numbered us 2 to 1, lvl 60 rogues camping every inn and one shotting anyone that logged in.
2. Honor system sucked
3. My friends in RL wanted to play alliance PvP (were on horde pvp and RP servers untill then) and never have i seen as many ninja, smack tards, and 1337 dudes than on alliance faction on pvp servers

Just cancel your subscription, your characters won't go anywhere.

I've let it run out for a few weeks, then paid for another month when I had the time.

Here's the official response, I actually emailed them about this yesterday:
=========================================================

Hello -----,

Our billing system is set up to manage payment and pre-paid time on your account on a monthly, 3 month, or 6 month increments (or 2 months if you are using a game card). However, we are not able to "pause" or otherwise suspend account access due to inactivity or infrequent use. Once the prepaid billing cycle begins, it will complete on its set time schedule and it cannot be reversed or refunded.

However, if you need to take a break from World of Warcraft, then you can temporarily cancel your subscription so that you will not be billed further, and your account will then be suspended until you go in and manually put in a new subscription. You can manage your subscriptions on the Account Management page:
http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/account/

At this time we have no plans to delete World of Warcraft accounts or characters for inactivity, even if the subscription is discontinued. This means that if you decide to take a break from the game and suspend your account payments, you will be able to continue playing at a later time when you resume your subscription and reactivate the account. Your characters will be there waiting for you.

Please keep in mind that any changes made to your account in regards to billing information will not go into effect until the end of your billing cycle. So if you prepay for 3 months, and cancel 1 month after you have paid, you will still have 2 more months before the cancellation goes into effect.

If you have further questions or concerns regarding subscriptions or account setup, please don't hesitate to contact our Billing & Account Services team. Please email billing@blizzard.com or call toll-free at 1-800-59-BLIZZARD (800-592-5499). Customers in Australia should call 1-800-041-378. Representatives are on hand to take calls between 9am and 6pm PST.

They really have no reason to delete them... It helps motivate players to return to see their toon is still there.

Tell that to SquareEnix and FFXI. Those bastards not only delete the characters after a few months, but the entire account so you have to purchase another.
