No, the question was "Does he own a timber company?" That answer is no. Does he have a share in one..it looks like it. Last I checked you need 51% control to own a company.

There's a difference between own and control.

And as others have pointed out from the factcheck reference, the point isn't whether he owns a timber company or not. The point is that by Bush's definition, he does own a timber company. Hence, by his debate answer, his own definition (used to criticize Kerry's proposed 39% tax bracket) is seriously flawed.

It's all really a moot point anyway; without Democratic control of Congress, an elected Kerry wouldn't have the juice to raise income taxes.

For the last freaking time, he owns 50% of it....there's only one guy as the other owner of 50%. I'd call that OWNING THE COMPANY. In fact, they FOUNDED it together.

FOX News is such a joke. I just saw this morning them talking about the "wood" deal and saying that the Trust didn't get into the lumber business till later, so Kerry was wrong (although "just" because of FactCheck.org reporting). Well,

a) the small business claim was correct,
b) the revenue ($84) was from an oil and gas investment (FOX at least got THAT right),
c) that trust is ALL Bush's! And he DOES own 50% of a timber company!

no one is claiming he is a TYCOON.

President Bush himself would have qualified as a "small business owner" under the Republican definition, based on his 2001 federal income tax returns. He reported $84 of business income from his part ownership of a timber-growing enterprise. However, 99.99% of Bush's total income came from other sources that year. (Bush also qualified as a "small business owner" in 2000 based on $314 of "business income," but not in 2002 and 2003 when he reported his timber income as "royalties" on a different tax schedule.)
