Does being late to work really matter that much?

This is inspired by that thread about that guy who got fired from Bank of A.

I noticed a bunch of people getting all pissy about people who show up late for work... I personally think that concept is a croc of sh!t. I am a systems engineer.... I have projects that I'm responsible for.... as long as I am getting my work done on, or before schedule nothing else should matter. If I come in for 30 mins a day or 14 hours a day... the important thing is the work gets done... Since I am a good engineer and all my work gets done.. noone ever gives me a hard time about coming in late or leaving early.

I personally think that this is the way things should be.... being on time or late... meh. It makes no difference to me. Results results results.

As a mgr, depends on what my co-workers task's are for the day. I've canned a few people just for the sake of them always being late to meetings, prior commitments related to work...

it is when you are in a customer intensive environment

burger flipper, cashier, retail, bank teller when you work in a business with set business hours (open to the public) and have other employees depending on you.

your work is "behind closed doors" when concerned with average joe wondering why theres no cashier to take his order at burger king.

depends, if you are in the service business, being on time is very important. btw, I am late to work almost everyday, but I don't leave at exactly 5pm either, so I guess my boss is ok with that.

Yeah I agree with that... if you have a meeting or engagement you better be on time... but the be at work by 8:00AM so help you god crap.... that just strikes me a as unnecessary harassment.

Yea it matters especially an establishments as banks and similar.

If I'm a banking customer, I don't want to have to wait for your ass to get in behind the teller booth.
I want you ready and waiting the the door opens.

it depends on your business. if you are dealing with customers all day you need to be present to serve them all day. If you are an individual contributor like yourself with very little overlook or interaction then it does not matter.

Kind of depends on the job. If you aren't dealing with customers that depend on you for service, then I feel the same way you do. I come to work late and leave early everyday. I get my work done though. Use to work at a bank, and they didn't appreciate pple being late, especially in the morning to open.

Being late to work shows disrespect for your boss and co-workers. People notice and they dont like it. Trust me.

harrassment?

As a retail manager if someone shows up late often just shows they don't care enough about the job and are fired. As someone out there really needs the job. Same with someone who calls off alot, a reliable person calls off maybe 3-4 times a year. Slackers about once every payday. Pretty easy to tell the difference 🙂

As others have said, it depends on the job.
At my job (engineer), as long as I get my hours in, get my work done, and are here for the "core" hours of 1000-1500, I'm good.
I've talked to some people who work in manufacturing environements who go docked an hours pay if they clocked in late at all, and lost their job if they did it more then twice in a month. And that was in a union shop. But in that case if one guy was late, the whole team couldn't start.

Yeah... getting on my case every morning for being 15 minutes late... that just creates unnecessary stress.... it would be one thing if I wasnt getting my work done, and done well. But as long as that is happening... getting on someone's case about something as trivial as being late for the first 2 hours when everyone sits around like zombies with coffee cups trying to wake up, that is harassment. STFU leave me alone... if I'm not getting my work done, then bitch at me... otherwise GFYS....

As for bank tellers, and the like positions... I agree with what others have said... then you have to be on-time... which is why I don't like those jobs.🙂

Like others have said 9334 times in this thread, it depends on the job. I show up late, but what does it matter? A lot of times I stay past when I'm supposed to get off anyway, with no OT. I don't hear the managers telling me to leave when that happens. If they don't have a problem with me working past 5, I don't have a problem coming in a little past 8.
