Does ATT still give you grandfathered unlimited data if you upgrade your iphone?

I have a 3gs, GF has a 3g. We're looking at upgrading to 4s' as part of the holiday festivities.

We were both grandfathered into unlimited data back when they made the change. If we get new phones but don't change our data plans, will we suddenly have data caps?

Also considering a switch (back) to Verizon, or maybe jumping to sprint. What's the current consensus on who's best? I'm thinking we'll go to Verizon unless we can keep unlimited data on ATT.

Also, have the battery issues been fixed yet? google seems to say no.

nope, you'll still be grandfathered in. the only thing at&t has changed is that if you're in the top few percent of users who use a lot of data, you will be throttled. the flip side is that if you go to the 200MB or 2GB plan, your data access is unthrottled. funny how that works right? i would stick with the unlimited data unless you know you use 200MB or less per month. 2GB isnt worth it for $25, might as well pay $5 more for unlimited.

no idea about battery issues. my sprint 4S is still on 5.0 (waiting on a jailbreak) and the battery life is okay - the phone can at least last a day on moderate usage.

Seconded. 3g -> 3gs grandfathered. Wife 3g -> 4 both over a year and a half ago though.

Fully expect to be able to keep when moving to whatever else comes out.

When i upgraded from a 3gs to 4s, it made me change my data plan, the mb and price was the same but the name was different. I wasn't on the unlimited tier.

I cannot comment about other companies iPhone other than what I hear. I know that with Sprint, location is key. There are people who complain about the Sprint 3g. I am not one of those, however, I am in a decent Sprint market. My gf has the iPhone and she loves it. She never really has issues with service or anything, but she is not the bandwidth hog some of ATers are. I know Sprint is working on their 3g towers around the country still cause of the addition of the iPhone, so it should only get better.

I personally use 4g exclusively as it is like being on wifi all the time. But iPhone doesn't have that yet. I have heard ATT is pretty good, but I hear people get a lot of dropped calls. Verizon I think has the best service, cause I never hear complaints about them other than their price point.

Went from 3GS to 4S.

Unlimited data plan stayed the same as did the price for it.

I used my grandfathered unlimited data when I first upgraded from my 3G to my iPhone 4 back in July 2010, but later moved to the 2GB plan so I could use Mobile Hotspot.

the only thing at&t has changed is that if you're in the top few percent of users who use a lot of data, you will be throttled.

Throttling only happens after the first 5GB of data used during a billing period and, as you said, you have to be using a very large amount of data each month.

I am with ATT and have grandfathered unlimited data going from 3G, 3GS, iP4s and iP4, then back with iP4s again….No problem. You will LOSE your grandfathered plan if you cancel with ATT for several reasons like bad coverage, etc.

My area have terrible coverage I still stick with ATT…I don't like Sprint with unlimited data plus $10 premium for 4G - why should I pay if 4G is not available in my area?!?
