I'd like to see the forum adopt a customizable avatar system where you get a little chibi you, where making more posts gets you forum currency which you can use to buy fabulous sprite clothing and apparel. A roleplaying sub-forum too, please. It works for GoGaia so I'm predicting a 500% increase in activity within the first year of implementation.

ATF is more about the content of one's post, and not the clothing of their avatar.
And yes, I realize just paraphrased MLK. It wasn't intentional at first. 😀

We just need forums that don't have broken features... though search works fine for me, actually.

Yeah, if I were running these forums I'd go all out with the forum modifications and customizations. I had a small anime website and forums before, and I had it set up with a bunch of RPG elements, custom ranks and pips, a little avatar store, a reputation system, custom themes, etc. And this was nearly 10 years ago on IPB... there are lot more addons available now. I wouldn't want do most of that stuff for a site like AnandTech, but at least deliver on the themes that we were supposed to get years ago. It has been nearly 5 years since we switched to vBulletin. I know more than a few of us would like dark themes for the forums that you can pick from a drop-down menu or user CP. It's literally 5 minutes of work to add in a few themes, and not likely to crash the forums or anything (and it's easy to roll back by deleting the themes). Thousands of forums have no problem doing that.

But this is still a fairly large forum that goes down for maintenance every Saturday night. I'm not sure the server administrator wants to do anything other than just maintain the site, so I'm not getting my hopes up. People are forgetting how bad Fusetalk was, not to mention time warps. Threads like this and the Suggestion Box pretty much limits us to stuff the moderators have power to do. The forum/server admin is on so rarely that I keep forgetting who he/she is.

These forums would almost be better if they just spun it out and gave control to someone who could maintain it better. I don't blame the mainsite people, but Anand isn't even around anymore - not that there is much interaction between the main site and forums anymore, anyway - you might as well make the forums a separate entity.

Yes, it needs fans, likes, animated emoticons, links to FB every where you look and it needs to run in the worst combination of java and flash so it crashes everytime you try to do something. Then, and only then, it would be up to date with every other 'flashy' site on the internet. Maybe then it can be the new FB and sell for billions of dollars to Apple. iNANTECH.

The golfer scene is just insanely LOL as the cart with his heart pills rolls into the pond and I agree, who the fuck needs animated Gif's as avatars, those sites look like they would appeal to 14yr old's..

Just haven't bothered elucidating yet. Likes, reps, upvotes, whatever, they're all clusterfuckey messes, and are a shortcut to mob rule. Besides that, I like that this place, while not private, has its own niche on the internet. Facebook integration, if it caught on, would erode that. Of course my real reason is that facebook is a hive of busybodies both private and corporate, but the rest is true too. 😉

I agree. There are way too many sub divisions of forums here.

But the slowness has to do with the fact that internet forums seem to be in decline overall.

Why don't you guys hang out at the 'hive'?

I hear life is good their even after they removed my sub-forum that epicly backfired because chances are when I am making fun of myself, I can handle seeing those pics again and again.
 
I suppose we could use an overhaul, by the time it's actually complete we'll probably be due anyway. I imagine in 10 years from now VB 3.8.7 will be considered pretty old.
