does as2 make that big a difference?

The reason I ask is because I used some as2 in my current setup, the 1700+ @2.2ghz 1.85v, and it works fine. Today, a friend from downstairs asked me to test out his new cpu, so I removed my slk-800 and stuck in his cpu. I tested it out and then I put my cpu back in, and it would restart just before it loaded windows. To get it to work, I had to bump it up to around 1.95v-2v for it to boot up into windows. So I'm thinking what the heck? I didn't change anything. I did remember that the as2 did seem a little spotty on the heatsink and cpu, but I didn't think that would have made that big a difference, but I thought what the heck so I reapplied the as2 and put everything back together, and voila, back at my current speeds.

Seems sort of odd. Without the Artic Silver, your temps would be a few degrees higher, but not all that much. When you upped the voltage to the processor, you also increased the heat it was putting out making things worse. The fact that your computer then ran seems opposite of what should have happened. Maybe I just dont quite get it...

how strange, I'm not exactly sure what I did, but I can run my mem at lower timings now too....how strange....it did 2-2-2-6 last night

You should always reapply the thermal compound when you remove the heatsink from the cpu. At very least you need to smooth out the existing compound on the cpu to make sure there are no gaps/ridges/uneven spots where air pockets might form. It sounds like that may have been your problem.

what the.....mem has been fine @ 2-2-2-4 for the past 4 hours. Before, it would crash after a minute 😕😕😕

That's kinda weird, I just put on AS3 today and my temps for my AMD T-Bird is @ 55C under full load. When I was using some thermal paste I scraped off the bottom of a Cooler MAster HSF my temps were @ 50C under full load

Edit: I turned my fan around so that it is sucking air from the HS. It's now running at a nice 50C under load.
