Be something if Microsoft could get its act together so we could have a viable alternative to both Android and iOS. Handset and app variety though are really holding it back. Also be nice if I could get a decent mid-range Windows Phone. The Lumina 640 costs almost as much as the Zenfone 2 for a third of the performance.

Doesn't microsoft already have handset and app variety?

Are you talking about android? If yes then you're wrong, you don't need to be rooted to install an older android version.

If you're talking an iphone, then you're also wrong, cause you can't revert to older ios versions regardless of whether you're jailbroken or not.

You're wrong, with SHSH Blobs you can revert to an older version of iOS. Before you upgrade to a new version, you run an app to create the Blob and you can go back. to your previous one if you so wish. You do have to be jailbroken to do this, but it can be done.

Uh, no... the latest Tinyumbrella supports local saving for all a7/a8 devices. so I can't downgrade my iP6+ to iOS 6, but that's no sh*t since it shipped with a version newer.

Ios needs to signed and verified by apple servers to get installed, otherwise it's IMPOSSOBLE to install.

Next phone I get will probably be Android simply because I want to go off contract and I'm not paying $800+ for a new iPhone, as nice as they are. Whatever I do buy though will have to run either stock Android or Cyanogenmod, so I don't have to deal with bloat and I'll get semi-consistent updates.

You've been paying that for your previous iPhones whether you realize it or not.

I think it's more of a case where they keep updating the OS (which is good) but then put it on hardware that is at best adequate. We have an iPad4 that keeps slowing down with every OS update. That's really saying something when all we've been using it for lately is some web browsing and Pandora. It takes forever to render webpages and forget about having more than 2-3 tabs open.

Yes, I understand it's a few years old but by comparison a 2013 Nexus7 is light years faster.

that's my advice to everyone! dont ever update your apple devices. sure you wont get security patches, but at least your machines are working as fast and competent as the day you got it. and if you really care about security, dont do finances or load it up with sensitive infos.

That's what Tinyumbrella's for, I've downgraded iPhones to unsigned versions, so no, it's not IMPOSSIBLE. All you need is to have made an SHSH Blob from your phone + Tinyumbrella and you're good to go.

http://www.iphonehacks.com/download-tinyumbrella

"Apple stops signing the firmware files (by not providing SHSH blobs) for older iOS versions to prevent users from downgrading. Tools like TinyUmbrella have allowed you to save the SHSH blobs, so you can use it to create (stitch) a pre-signed IPSW file, which could then be used to restore your device with an iOS version that Apple was no longer signing.

Apple has closed the loophole that allowed users to use the SHSH blobs in newer devices (iPhone 4S and later) and also in iOS 7 or later. So you cannot restore to 6.x using SHSH blobs except on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPod touch 4G (and iPad 2 to iOS 5.x if you have iOS 4.x and iOS 5.x SHS blobs)."
