the rio karma is about the size of an MD player and comes with Sennheiser MX300 (I think that's the model) earbuds.

First off, as I stated above (I just now added it), I don't want an iPod. I have no idea what justifies their price tag, and they're a little big as well.
Secondly, I heard that the software on some of these devices isn't so good. Can you all please let me know what your software was like as well? SPECIFICALLY with the Rio Cali!

Armstrap for my RCA Lyra player. Works fine at the gym and for jogging.

I now have a RIO Carbon I use exclusively for working out. It's great. Much smaller than the iPod mini, and it stores 5gigs worth of tunes and has a 20hour battery life. Overall, a much better value than the Mini.

How long does it take to download 5 GB or MP3s to the RIO carbon (using USB 2.0, of course)?
On another score I'm wondering how shock-resistant these players are. If you drop your MP3 player two feet onto a rubberized matt, is it history?

Does anyone know if you can use an Ipod like a USB flashcard? The flashcard MP3 players are like 200 bucks for 512-1 gig of memory, while the Ipod is like 300 for 20 gigs of memory. If I could use an Ipod as a flashdrive as well as an mp3 player, it seems like it'd be the best solution.

Yes, you can.
Our archetecture students use them like that all the time. I have a couple of recovery tools installed on mine.
