Does anyone work out using an MP3 player?

Just like the topic says, I'm looking for an MP3 player to use when I work out, but I don't know if it would work that well. Any recommendations?

Edit: Oh, and please don't suggest an iPod. I very much appreciate your feedback, but I have about as much interest in buying one of those as I do in shooting myself in the foot with a nail gun.

i wear cargo shorts when i lift, so my ipod mini goes in there just fine. when i do cardio (it's been almost 6 months ahaha) i just slide it into the armband. works awesome.

I just drop my Creative MuVo2 or Zen Xtra into my pocket and I'm good to go. Earphones that slide / clip around the back of your are are a must, though.

I have a protective case that goes over my Creative Zen 20 gig. Kind of bulky but the case has a loop like a belt-buckle. I'm a weird case as I always lift weights in my jeans. But I just have the thing attached to my belt. Works like a charm.

While running, obviously wearing swishees. I just put the player on Eliptical, Treadmill, etc. No big whoop.

I use a 256MB Rio Cali. It has an armband and weighs practically nothing. Since it is solid state there is no way for it to skip. I have a 256MB SD card in it aas well (512MB total), but am looking around for a 1GB SD (to give me 1.25 GB of flash memory).

First off, as I stated above (I just now added it), I don't want an iPod. I have no idea what justifies their price tag, and they're a little big as well.

Secondly, I heard that the software on some of these devices isn't so good. Can you all please let me know what your software was like as well? SPECIFICALLY with the Rio Cali!

DAMNIT! I knew someone would make a sarcastic comment about my choice of wording for the topic.

Oh well, at least it took awhile.

Any particular reason, or did you just want to say that?

I think that the SW that comes with the Rio Cali is fine (called Rio Music Manager). It searches your music folders and can categorize based on almost anything in the ID3 tag. You can also use Windows Media Player and a few other third party apps. The Cali supports playlists (which in my opinion is a must) and has a built in FM radio. The interface on the player is fine, I have never had a problem with it. In my opinion the best thing about it is that it can accept SD memory. I can't wait to get that 1GB card.

Lastly, there is a new version of the Cali out (same packaging, but the little joystick is black while old ones are orange) that allows Windows to see the Cali as a drive. This allows direct drag and drop of files through Windows Explorer. If you get one I would suggest looking for the newer version.

I have a 3GB RCA Lyra. It's small and come with an arm band holder so you can use it easily while working out. It's perfect for this in IMO.

Also it allows playlists to be created and loaded. The software required to create the playlist is MusicMatch jukebox i believe. The software comes with (of course), but I haven't tried this out. I just scroll the audio files hit play and let the shuffle function determine the music. You can also do the same concept only with Genre.

Hope the info helps and happy hunting.

I have a Nomad (I know it's not too sweet) but I enjoy working out with it since it keeps me focused and nobody tends to bother me while i lift.

That is correct, I have a RIO S35S which can be bought for ~$60 and comes with 64MB internal memory with expansion slot up to 512MB or total 576MB. It comes with armband and is sturdy and doesn't flap around any. I use this 3-4 times a week for working out in the gym, on benches, standing, and sitting. I run the headphones down the back of my shirt and out my sleeve to connect to my RIO which keeps the headphone wires from getting caught. You learn quick about that ;)

It runs off of 1AAA that last me about 1 month. I only use it during workouts that last about 1 hour a piece. The headphones are on par, but you may want to upgrade. I haven't yet, but will soon since I lost one of the spongy things that covers the headphones.

I use the existing 64MB and convert my mp3/wma to 96kbps bitrate and can fit ~20 songs on it.

I would HIGHLY recommend this for someone who doesn't want to splurge on an IPOD or carry around something they may be scared of breaking. I have dropped mine numerous times with no problems.

Hope this helps.

For weightlifting/runnning I use my iRiver iFP-180T (flash-based). I bought the armband as an extra from iRiver's site. I also use Koss Sportaphones that stick to my head like glue. I found earbuds didn't stay on very well for me.

The software for transferring music is fine - just drag'n'drop from an Explorer-like interface.

I also have a Creative Nomad Zen Xtra (40GB) that I use for walking/commuting. It's really to big to take to the gym, and since it's hard-drive based, it'd be stupid to run with it. I use Sony MDR-EX71SL Fontopia Headphones (they go inside your ear canal) with that for better sound. ($36 from Amazon right now).

I also use the Rio Cali to workout and have never had any problems with it. Lightweight, small and nice interface. The software that comes with it sucks, so I use WMP.

I don't bring one with me when I lift, just gets in the way especially when I use free weights. I use my rca lyra jukebox when I run though.
