Does anyone use their PC for karaoke?

If so, what software/equipment do you use?

Are there Top 40 songs available to sing to?

Do any of the programs allow you to record your singing?

Just lookin' to be the next American Idol. j/k

Well, I don't karaoke but my dad does so when he comes over to visit, my PC becomes the karaoke machine.

Basically, I have a Audio Technica MB2000 microphone (any dynamic, low impedence, cardioid mic would do anyway) that I hook up to the mic input on the external breakout box of my SB Audigy Platinum eX.

For playback software, I use PowerDVD since it can separate out left and right channels. Very useful especially for those VCDs that have vocals on one channel and music on the other.

I don't record the singing, but if I wanted to I would use Cool Edit Pro. I've used it for recording audio from videos, so it should work for karaoke too - I'll just set my recording input to either analog mix or "What u Hear" and record away.

Well, if you want to put money into it

Audio card- Card Delux
Mic- Some kind of Sennheiser
Software- Cool Edit Pro

We use Software Audio Workshop here at work, but we do have the Card Delux and new Sennheiser mics (sorry, don't know the model number).

Remember, the Card Delux is a professional card, and is therefore pricey (ours was $399). The mic will run around $300-400 as well. These would be good steps towards a home studio, if you're a good singer ;)

You could also get a good board if you wanted. Those can run upwards of $20,000!

Where is a good place to get songs to karaoke to?

Is it possible to remove the voice portion from a CD or mp3 track (or at least fade it a great deal) so that song can be "karaoked"?

If you were in Asia (or Malaysia, specifically) I could show you a ton of stores that sell karaoke VCDs and DVDs.

Anyway, software to remove vocals from audio tracks do exist, but depending on the software and the song itself, the results can vary. I don't really know anything specific, though I reckon you'll be able to find a bunch of them by searching Google or even some of the download sites (e.g. Download.com).
