A friend of mine made me laugh the other day when she asked for a "monkey wrench". That expression reminds me of the square hunk of steel and wood my grandfather. She saw nothing wrong with the term, but it seems very old-fashioned to me. Does anyone here use it instead of "adjustable wrench"?

Left-handed combination wrench.

Or I just point to the wrench and scream to my wife, "THAT THING!"

I use the term monkey wrench to refer to what may also be called a pipe wrench.

When I hear the term I think of a wrench like that, not a 1/2" box wrench like she wanted.

grrl, can you get me that monkey wrench on the table?

I'd be looking for a big, heavy wrench.

Only when used in a phrase like;
" that threw a monkey wrench into the works"
