Rockbox is a free software replacement for the firmware held on various forms of digital audio players (DAPs). Rockbox offers an alternative to the host device's operating system firmware (in many cases without removing the original firmware) which provides a plug-in architecture for adding various enhancements and functionality to DAPs which are not present in the original OS. Enhancements include PDA functionality, applications, utilities, and games. Rockbox can also retrofit video playback functionality onto DAPs first released in mid-2000. Rockbox also includes a voice-driven user-interface suitable for operation by blind and visually impaired users.

In other words, it replaces the OS your manufacturer put on your MP3 player and adds functionality.

I installed it on my wife's Sansa that I got from Woot (is that what you're looking at?) I didn't care for it much - I couldn't see any benefit whatsoever, and it wasn't as 'pretty' or intuitive as the default firmware, so I ditched it. I suppose it can play MPG movies (the default firmware appears to support QT only), but I don't know what other benefits it offers, at least to me.

I actually got two players from Woot so I was thinking about installing again on the other, which I haven't opened yet, but it's not been a priority for me so it remains in the box.

I tried it on my ipod a few years ago and the interface was too difficult for regular use. Also, it drained the battery really quickly.

I use it on my ipod. No idea how it compares to the stock firmware as I never touched the stock firmware (I'm not going to install iTunes). I can drag and drop my music, and it adds FLAC support.

I haven't tried them all but the few that I used were 'meh'. I haven't had much time to devote to the project though.

You kidding me? The sansa has 16bit colors to work with and for that reason they have the sexiest looking themes imho. In fact, that's why I'm looking to

There's no way this one is 'meh'. Tell me that's not sexy. :)
