I still do. Besides, I like the CD booklet.

Plus, I enjoy the art of listening to an entire CD.

Oh, and I know that I can download CD's illegally for free, but I'm not a cheap bastard. Plus, like I said, I like the CD booklet, and sometimes the CD's come with free DVD's and bonus stuff.

I only buy CDs from bands I see in person. Otherwise, I use digital only.

Lots of people do or Best Buy and Walmart wouldn't devote huge sections of their stores to CD.

Yup. I rip to FLAC, scan the front cover (I'm kind of OCD about high quality cover art, lol), then the CD goes into storage. I'll usually flip through the cover book one or two times before storing it away, though.

Artists and download services need to get together and figure out how to issue the liner notes with downloads. iTunes offers digital books with some titles but not very many. I still prefer CDs but I am buying more and more music as downloads.

I've only bought 2 or 3 CDs in my life. I still buy LPs on occasion, though.

sound quality from vinyl? lol.

you geezers crack me up. you can like the way it sounds, but large amounts of noise generally don't go hand in hand with what i would call 'sound quality.'

I try to. The ones I want are out of print and the used prices are ridiculously expensive.

Generally I check out most of the album before buying. If its just one or two songs, and I can't get the CD that cheap or its not one of my favorite songs/bands, then I'll just buy a digital version.

If they would sell 24/96 versions on DVDs and digitally, and didn't fuck them up beforehand, and they don't try to stuff DRM and/or jack up the price ($10-15 would easily be feasible), it would sell. I also think there would be a market for binaural recordings (put that haircut recording on iTunes and watch people go crazy over that).

Why the music industry is so staunch about taking steps backwards is beyond me. There's a ton of technology they could exploit even for marketing, but instead we're going the complete opposite direction. Sadly, we don't even really have the choice of speaking with our money on this issue, aside from just plain not buying music to begin with.

You don't understand the Nyquist rate, do you?

Something about minimum sampling needed to avoid aliasing... Also known as lower then what a standard music cd is recorded at. But you already knew that right?

LOL @ people who honestly seem to have tricked themselves into believe that vinyl sounds superior to digital CDs. You have a serious superiority complex if you really believe you can discern the "roughness" of a 44,000hz signal.

The art of listening to a CD? What the hell are you talking about?

I don't really buy music. Most recently a had a month subscription to emusic, and was able to get some music I really like (ed alleyene johnson) at significantly cheaper price than trying to buy one of his cd's. Besides that, it's been about a few years since I've bought a physical cd, when I had a gift card and 10% off coupon to B&N. I've always thought about going to look for used cd's, but the shipping online often kills the deals and I don't want to spend a weekend looking around a use music store...would probably lead to too many impulse buys.

However, when I buy music it will be in CD form unless there is a significant discount for buying digital. I much prefer having a tangible product.

you don't understand human hearing, do you?

most 'audiophile' (i use that term loosely) gripes with CD's concern the mixing/mastering. a frequency limit of 20+khz might matter to your dog, but it doesn't to you.

I have a test for you.

Get a signal generator that can generate sine, tringle and square waves.

Run a 7KHz sine wave, triangle wave, and a square wave. If you can't tell the difference then you're good listening 32 KHz MP3s :).

I listen to a lot of bands that aren't necessarily popular enough to be spammed on torrent sites or usenet.

also, if I like an album enough, I'll go out and buy a physical copy to support the musicians... I feel like I appreciate a cd a lot more than just MP3's. MP3's will get written onto my ipod and lost in the shuffle. I'll actually listen to a cd the whole way through a few times.
