I don't want to have to burn it first or be tied to some gimp iTunes program. does anyone do it anymore?

I thought that was new and the selection was limited? Are they higher priced?

I just found one of those russian places, legalsounds.com, $.09/song - it must be legal, it's in the name!

itunes doesn't sell mp3s, they sell aac. emi songs are like 33%? more and have slightly more bitrate with drm free aac. the other labels didn't jump on board that yet. still annoying they aren't giving more format choise

i think amazon was going to sell mp3? i dunno about the bitrate again...

but yea the major ones are russian, and they aren't totally legit but the industry pretty much pushes you to them since they offer the best selection and choices of encoding and such. all of mp3 and its decendents gave you choices up to lossless like flac, you had total freedom to choose, very nice. shows how easily viable it is to offer, stupid music companies are just standing in the way of offering a legal version.
