HELP!!!!! Echo is programmed to do a backup 1/week. But every time it does a backup, it freezes my computer so when I come in the next day, I'm looking at a black screen and no amount of moving the mouse brings the screen up - but the hard drive is on, & the monitor is on. I have to cold-boot my computer to get it working again. This would be more of an annoyance than a problem if this was my computer at home. Unfortunately, this is at work and everyone's computer is networked into mine. Also, Echo keeps "reading" and "seeking" & thinking that it's using up actual tape space so by 3pm I get a message from Echo saying my tape is full. Once I re-boot (normally), the backup's monitor shows that yes, I indeed do have more space on my tape. So, it starts "reading" and "seeking" & I come in the next day and have to cold-boot my computer. What is it's problem & why is it having it NOW? Yes, I'm completely frustrated because all I've done was move the damn thing from one side of the hard drive to the other - no shaking, no stirring, etc. & I can't get in touch with anyone from OnStream. I would appreciate ANY help whatsoever ANYONE can give me.

Can you try new cable?

I set up an internal IDE drive at the wife's office. The echo software is not the best and we have had a few problems with it. We are running the latest version now and it has been trouble free for about a year.

If it was me, I would try a new cable if I could. Don't imagine it's hardwired into the drive but you would know.
I replace the tapes from time to time.
They make a cleaner cartridge. They aren't cheap but are a good thing to use.
I would erase and retension the tape or tapes. Don't recall the exact menu options without being in front of the computer.
Upgrade to the latest software. If you're running the latest version, I would uninstall and reinstall it. Also download the latest version anyway. I get the impression they make improvements without changing the version number.

I do, or have done all of these.

Hope this helps.

I noticed your reply when searching for information on OnStream Echo backup equipment. I purchased the equipment on 4-1-01 and when attmpting to reach them was given a message they were bankrupt and out of business. You indicated that you had updated your software. Can you supply a web address , phone number or contact regarding this software from OnStream Echo?

It's been ages since I'd done any of this.

I don't know if they were bankrupt when I posted this or if it was shortly thereafter. This is the second bankruptcy that I know of and I don't expect they will be back this time.

I have some versions of Echo for a DI-30 archived. If you need it and I have it, I can make it available to you. If you bought it new you most likely have the latest software version.

I originally went to Onstream.com to download the upgrade, but I just tried a couple weeks ago & the site is no longer available. I was talking to some people who used to work for them, because now that we have new computers I needed to get the upgrade again, who said they were left high & dry with all this equipment & nobody to send it to & they had no clue who I should talk to. I read a press release saying the US branch had gone bankrupt but the headquarters in the Netherlands was still operational but good luck trying to reach them. I've faxed and emailed & nobody's gotten back to me. I'm now doing backups through Windows & having them stored on the Onstream tapes. Works for me. Hope this helps.
