Just curious, because at work we always have laptop users come by without them at work. I know that you're all hardware gurus, but I wonder if some of you still don't avoid anitvirus software and why?

PS. Mods this can be a hardware issue, some viruses can hurt hardware :p

At home I don't use any virus software. Why? No posibility of a virus infecting me. At work, I use whatever is free at the moment.

I haven't had an AV for 4-5 years, and I've never had a virus. Of course, no one touches my machine but me and my GF, and we know what is safe to d/l and what is not safe.

For the most part you'll be safe from viruses if you don't open attachments you weren't expecting and don't exchange software with people.

I agree Chipset.
Ever since I got a modem about 8 years ago, the only viruses I have gotten were email attachemnts, and I didn't need any AV software to tell me not to open them. I'll admit I am using a free AV program just to be safe.

I don't use them either. Never had a problem and I am constantly downloading stuff.

For the most part it really depends on the user. I use one at home because my wife has lot's of friends that send her lot's of junk and I can't always monitor what she opens. She is smart about it, but you never know. I personally don't need one because I am carefull and know what I am doing. However on the flip side of that I recommend all my clients to use one however the virus shield is only as good as it's last update so most of the time they don't do anything anyway!

I don't use one because my school filters our email with the exchange server and I also know what not to open in attachments.

I don't use one either for home and haven't for over a year; mostly for the same reasons people have already listed. I do have a proxy and firewall program running though.
