Does anyone make dual P4 socekt 478 RD boards?

I'm looking to build one this summer and all i see are Dual P4 Xeon boards.
I can't afford Dual Xeons =(.

Correct. There will be now Sckt478 dual boards anytime soon.
 
Intel learned from their P3 mistake. The P3 processor worked perfectly and easilly in dual mode. This made the P3 Xeon a terrible seller (it was only worth the money if you needed more than 2 processors). Since Intel has a larger profit on the Xeon line, that mistake cost Intel a lot of money.

Now the P4, while it has the same core as the Xeon, was made to work only as a single processor. It might be possible to work around it, but the added cost for some custom workaround isn't worth it. Intel also made the price difference between the P4 and the Intel Xeon much smaller than the price difference between the P3 and the P3 Xeon. Thus there is less incentive to try to make a workaround.

An Intel Xeon costs roughly $100 more than the equivalent P4. A theoretical dual P4 motherboard would cost about the same as a dual Xeon motherboard. Thus you would only end up paying $200 more to go the dual Xeon route.

The current sweet spot in Intel Xeon processors is the 1.8 GHz Xeon (Northwood core) for $232. Hopefully next months price cut will include the Intel Xeon pushing the 2.0A GHz Xeon into the $250 range. If that occurs, then a barebones dual 2.0A Xeon can be built for about $1300 (including shipping and tax). Of course a decently equipped dual 2.0A GHz Xeon will still be in the $1750 range:

Dual 1.8A Xeon: 2x$232 = $464
SuperMicro MB: $390
Cheap videocard: $25
20 GB 7200rpm: $55
128 MB RDRAM: 2x$14 = $28
Case + PS: $200
CDrom, floppy, mouse: $50
Linux Operating system: $0
Shipping+Tax: $100

Total: $1312.

How much could you afford? After Intel's next price cut, the computer priced above might be about $1150.

Dullard, all your prices are correct except for the case and power supply. SuperMicro's Xeon boards need a special power supply that only two companies make, SuperMicro and PC Power and Cooling. I bought the SuperMicro 400w version that sells for $120, the PC Power and Cooling version sells for between $160-180. As for the case you'll need a full tower case that can take an EATX board (12"x13").

Sorry I just did a quick search on Xeon cases and power supplies. Since I don't deal much with cases, I didn't know the SuperMicro won't operate without an expensive case/PS. However, add $100 to the price and go with linux instead of Windows, skimp even more on the video card, and maybe "forget" to pay the state taxes and the price still comes under $1300. My point is that on these forums everyone says the Intel Xeons are expensive - if you can build a dual 1.8 GHz for $1300 they aren't very expensive.

One of the most common replys on this forum when talking about dual Intel Xeons is that an equal speed dual Athlon system could be built for $1000 less. Well show me a dual Athlon for $300.

Intel Xeon processors just aren't nearly as expensive as people think they are. (P3 Xeons and Xeon MP are expensive, but not the Intel Xeon).
 
two things the projected cost in may?was listed as 267.00 at 2cpu.com as the price cut for the 2.2 xeon woot

and secondly the p-4 non xeon is smp capable through the chipset?right?or why would asus be looking at making a dual p-4 board non xeon ?i know it's rumor but i thought i read that the p-4 was not smp capable because it had no support in the chipset but essentialy was the same as the xeon?

I fully understand what you?re taking about. When I built my dual Xeon rig everybody said I spent too much money but when you add up the cost of a dual MP rig (yes real MP's not XP's) there?s not that big a difference in price between the two.
